Looking for a harness bar that has a hoop behind each seat.
Ecklers shows one but it is for the C4 ONLY
If I have to, I guess I will buy a harness bar and get the hoops welded on and then powder coated or chromed, but I would like to find one ready to go.
Thanks, I know about the BK, but that's not what I am looking for, basically I want a hoop style roll bar behind EACH seat. Picture the roll bar on a Shelby Cobra and add one for the passenger. Basically a harness bar with the roll bar hoops behind each seat.
Here is a link to Arizona Speed and Marine. the picture they show is exactly what I want but it is available ONLY like this on the C4. this is the same one Ecklers carries. Arizona shows the wrong car initially on the C5 area, but when you click on the harness bar it shows the same style as a BK for the C5. http://www.azspeed.com/c5ls1-3.html
The AS&M C5 harness bar is the only one I know of where adding roll hoops might do some good, since it is also the only one whre the bar is almost resting on the ridge behind the seats. Any other bar that is "free flying" across the inside of the car could easily bend way downward if pressure is applied to the hoops. Might even collapse the factory roll structure.
On the other hand, I don't think that adding hoops to the AS&M bar is a good idea. I had thought about doing it to my bar last year but would need a shim under the bar and some sort of fore-aft bracing for the hoops to support much load. And even then, I'm not sure how strong the structure under the floor ridge is.
Any add on harness bar is a compromise between increased safety for impacts, and decreased safety for roll-overs: in various other cars with just the stardard belts, many people have survived roof collapse because they leaned (forced?) sideways, or the seatback broke and they flopped back. Bad, but not as bad as being held upright by a harness bar. The C5 has a pretty good factory roll structure and I have not seen a picture of one that collapsed, and I've seen many pictures of rolled over Coupes.
Also, I would only use the AS&M bar if you have the Sport Seats, or some other seat that allows the shoulder belts to go straight through the seatback to the bar. If you have stock ZO6 seats, going straight back to the Brey-Krause bar, Hardbar, etc seems safer to me than going down and outside the seatback to the AS&M. The only advantages to the AS&M bar/Sport Seat combo are that the shoulder straps will hold you in place a little better in a side impact, and the downward angle of the straps, although it can cause spinal compression, also helps keep you down in the seat during a rollover or frontal impact where your head can hit the targa top front latches.
As I said, any harness bar is a compromise. For further research, try the Search function for Harness Bars in the Racing section.
The AS&M C4 bar is not a very good bar to model anything after. The two hoops are supposed to keep the bar from rotating forward if there is pressure applied to the shoulder belts. Each of the hoops has a small 1/2 x 3/16 x 10 or so inches bar welded to the top that goes forward to be bolted to the targa roof bolt holes. The bars are flimsy and once installed can be moved by hand. If any real pressure was applied to them the hoops would break off and the shoulder belt mounts would rotate forward. On the C4s these problems are reduced by welding reinforcement plates from the down riggers leading from the stock shoulder belt mounting holes to the under body framework of the car just behind the rear seats.

How about this, get the Brey Krouse (doesn't this bar have stabilizer bars to keep it from rotating?) and weld a roll bar hoop behind each seating postion?
I want this type of "look", I do not plan to track the car, and may or may not install a harness on it.
Thanks for all the info so far!
I’m not sure from your message if you intend to use the bar for harnesses or just want it for show. If it’s just for show then go with the roadster bars since it looks better but you can’t mount harness rigs to it. If you plan on competing, don’t worry about the looks so much and get a good harness bar that wont rotate. I have a Hardbar myself. It probably the strongest one of all but it’s not for everyone. The B/K bar is probably your best bet if you are going to put hoops on it because it rides higher than the AS&M. The Crossbar is square (?) so… Anyway, good luck. – C.
Thanks guys.
Looks like I will go Brey Krause (bar has donward bars that attach to the rear seat bolts and keep it from rotating, and is flat) and weld the roll bar style hoops I want onto the flat portion. Then get it powder coated or chromed.
Thanks for all the reply and suggestions :)
