A 2002 Z06 I'm looking at runs well except that it has some issues getting into reverse. Feels like it is jammed and if pressure is placed to force it into gear than it will grind. This doesn't necessarily happen all of the time and if the car is rolling forward just a little than it will pop into reverse fine. Selecting 1st or other gear prior to putting it into reverse doesn't seem to make much difference.
From some other posts on the forum apparently the car has a reserve syncro that sometimes fails, is this the likely issue or is it more likely to be a linkage alignment issue(is this even possible?). Reverse lockout interfering? Clutch......something else?
The car has ~35,000 miles on it. I think I can get ~$3,000 knocked off the price if I fix the issue myself. Worth it?
This happens with my 03Z as well. It is just the gears clashing Vs meshing thus keeping the tranny from going all the way into gear. I would tell you that I wouldn't accept a $3K drop due to this. There is nothing to fix. My 97 did it and I never had a transmission problem. My Z has 41K miles on it and the transmission has done this for the past 4 years. I just make sure when I am shifting into reverse I shove the gear shift into reverse and slowly let the clutch out which moves the gears just enough to let them mesh together. You can tell because the shifter will move just a little as they mesh. If I forget and just take my hand off the shifter and let the clutch out the gears will grind and the tranny will jump out of its half in gear position.
Yay.. i'm not alone. I just bought a 2001 C5 yesterday. Same issue. Exactly. It only hops out of reverse. So what is really the fix for this? I've read in different places that it could be "shifter alignment" or the syncro could be busted.
Any thoughts?
Bill, you just hold the shifter in place and it works?
