Default HUD question

I have a 98 and found someone to sell me the HUD out of their 00, do I need a special windshield for this to work?

Thanks

Yes. You will need a special windshield for the HUD. Don't know what else you will need. I would imagine you will need the whole dashboard too because thats where the HUD controls are.

Over the years, I've seen on this forum, several entries on installing HUDs in non-HUD cars. In fact there was a thread a couple of years ago, that had photos of how to do it.

As I recall, the Dash is pre-configured to accept the HUD, it just needs to be cut.

As I understand, the windsheild glass is thinner. On the standard glass, the display image is not focused properly. I'm sure guys with more detailed information will jump in and add their $.02

Many have installed HUD with standard windshield and it works fine .I am doing the install now and there is a ton of info on the forum . The dash pad is marked on the bottom where to cut and you will need to buy the trim bezel for it . Available if you know where to look for 30-40 dollars. Mine is an 01 so my cluster was hud compatible .I am not sure what years but some earlier than mine do not have hud compatible clusters so you need it as well. The the switch and 11 pin wire connector that goes from switch to cluster .Have fun ,good luck with your project .

The guy who is helping my with the install says that it can be done on a non-HUD windshield with no problems. It seems that half of the people say, "yes" and half say, "no". Now I am totally not sure. lol. Anymore responses?

You ask about the windshield but more important is that the HUD was not an option in 98. 1999 was the first year for the option.

You will need an instrument panel from a 2000 and up. (Many but not all 99’s have the proper IP with a receptacle for the HUD harness)

Most agree that you can see the HUD just fine (no blur) with a regular windshield.

You don't need the special windshield! I just put a HUD in my 04 coupe and the regular windshield works fine.

I am the guy helping the OP. I had a guy here yesterday that installed HUD on a non-HUD car and I sat in it and it displayed perfectly. I just don't want to sell this stuff if it isn't going to work for him. So, anyone else that has had success installing HUD in a non-HUD car without changing the windshield please chime in. I really want Michael's money.

Thanks, Mike

I am the 1 who will be installing the HUD on mikes car. I installed the HUD on my 98 when i had it and it worked just fine!!! I also became a HUD installer for a forum member Pacethis when he was selling them a few years ago and have done 3 installs of the HUD on older non HUD cars.what is needed for the install is the following

hud projector
hud controls
11 pin wire harness
hud trim dash bezel
and a 2000 -2004 instrument cluster

you however DO NOT nedd to replace your winshield !!!! your winshield will work just fine and if it doesnt i will give you my 2000 C5 for free!!! there you now have it in writing mike

I didn't know you two knew each other. I guess I should have put 2 and 2 together when I sent parts out the same day to the same city. I'd like to thank both of you for putting my kids through Harvard.

Does anyone know exactly what is different from a HUD windshield and a standard windshield?

From what I understand, the HUD windshield has very small lines within the glass to display the image. It has "HUD" etched in the glass in the middle at the bottom. I believe you would have to take the plastic windshield cowling off to see it.
