OK. I put in the ripper around 2 weeks ago. The shifts were short and firm. Yesterday I noticed that my shifts were not short anymore. It was almost like it was stock again. No firmness either! The car still shifted fine just longer throws not the click, click, click like it was.I took apart the console to look for anything odd or loose. I did not find anything wrong. I even took the shifter off and put it back on. But still the same thing. I called B&M and they said that it was basically impossible for their shifter not to throw shorter. They said that they would make an exchange but it would not really make a difference. I need Help!! I do not know what else would cause this except maybe an issue with the tranny but what that could be I have no idea. Any Ideas??
If the shifter is installed correctly there is another possible cause. Right where the bottom of the shifter plugs in (I don't know what it's called but it connects the shifter, through the tunnel, to the tranny) there appears to be some sort of adjustment that can be performed on this rod. Check to see if the slip joint is loose. Also make sure the plastic bushing did not fall off of the bottom of the shifter shaft. It definately does not sound like a problem with the Ripper unless the bushing popped off.
Tranny shop said that there should be no problem. Damn I guess its my imagination. I have heard that somethimes you do have to make shift adjustments. How does that work?
Do you have the version with the shift stops? Maybe they fell out. Been known to happen. New versions don't have them. Just an idea to check. Good luck.
I bought mine a year ago, so if you've purchased one withing the year I doubt it has shift stops.
Here is a test for you. Measure the length of your throw. Start with the shifter in 3rd and the car in park. Put the end of a ruler dead center to the top of the **** and shift to 4th. See what the center of the **** now reads on the ruler. It should read 5 inches. I measured my stock throw compared to the ripper and it went from 7" to 5".
If the ripper doesn't feel firm anymore, maybe your springs are bad. You can replace them yourself and actually modify the feel by buying different strength springs from a hardware store. I made the movement to the left very hard and to the right much easier. This was because I was catching 2nd instead of 4th at the track. Now it works like a charm. Good luck and let me know what you measured.
It all may just be the fact that you've gotten used to it. :)
One way to be sure you are not slipping where the shifter connects to the rods that run back to the tranny is to put it in a gear and see if you can force the shifter left or right with some moderate effort. If so, the connection on the rods is loose and needs to be tightened. That is a simple fix, torx head bolts.
