Driving my car today and car is making a whining noise when my foot is on the accelerator, I let off the gas, noise goes away. Checked all fluid levels, gauges, etc. everything is fine. Had tranny and differential fluid changed last year. Any ideas of what this may be or what I should start checking?
First step is to pull the top drain plug on the diff. If you stick your finger in and don't feel fluid very near the surface you need to add some. You could be low but if it is whinnig on decel already you may be screwed. Ad some fluid if low and give it a go.

Whining only happens when I am accelerating, once I take my foot off the gas it goes away.
Took the car to the mechanic today he said fluid levels were fine, added some new type of lubricant, said there were some extremely small metal filings that could barely been seen with the aid of a flashlight.
Where is the whine coming from, front or rear? In all probability its obviously either the trans or the differential. Did it happen suddenly and loudly or did it slowly increase over time? If suddenly, I would suspect you broke a tooth on a gear.

Sounds like its coming from the rear end but tuff to tell. It came on suddenly, not very loud but never heard it before and I can notice it now. So what happens if I broke a tooth on a gear?

Really there is no choice. It has to be fixed and right away or else you could possibly damage a lot more. If I was you, get it up on jack stands, have someone put it in gear and get under it to identify whether its trans or differential. Once you know, you might want to contact a forum vendor such as RPM Transmissions and they can help you out right away.
I am having this exact same problem to the tee! I can't figure this out. The noise I have is really loud, louder than the engine at some points. As soon as I let off the gas it goes away right away.
I have tried 3 fluid changes in the last 2 days. I am curious as to what this can be. How do you check the backlash on these?

My 4.10 did exactly what has been described, I neglected it and broke a tooth on the pinion (only took 5k mi).. Now I have a 3.15 from an auto but at least the stinking whining and grinding (grinding after the tooth broke) is gone.
