Here's my problem(s). I have an MMS 385 Stroker '01 Z06. The tranny, diff and torque tube are stock with the exception of the addition of Redline oil products to the tranny and diff. I have been experiencing a grinding noise coming from the rear of the car when accelerating (usually around 4,000 rpm's in each gear) and also when accelerating out of turns. It is a vibration and noise that comes from behind you and sweeps up into your seat (you feel it in your butt and back). I also have a very recent slow dripping tranny leak (the seal between the tranny and the diff). Also, Mike Morgan has advised me that in decel tests (in neutral) my car has 10-12 RWHP more drag than other C5's. I also have a lot of noise coming from the torque tube (even with some insulation over the Ripper).
My question is, has anyone seen similar problems with the noise and the HP loss. Is it the tranny? Is it the diff? Is it me?
I am scheduled for a tranny re-seal at my local Chevrolet dealer on Monday (yikes!!!!). Should I be attempting to get a new tranny or diff (assuming a favorable dealer under warranty)? Would the dealer even know the difference if it hit them in the head (you usually have to show them what's wrong in person 3 times before they get it)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know if this applies, but it might be worth looking at while the car is apart.
I have had the Trans/diff leak twice. After the first one, a humming noise started in fifth gear. It got louder and louder until I stopped using it. Until it was fixed I didn't relize that I had several other noise, too. But Corvettes are noisy.
Anyway the 5th/6th gear idler shaft has a small bearing on the end of it. The bearing itself was shot.
While it's apart, have the mechanic look at it. There is also a magnet in the Trans case which picks up everything. You might be surprised just how much.
