Default Help Oil pressure question

I am getting around 65-80 lbs of pressure at 2,000 rpm @ 70 miles and hour... I never use to get this? I have owned this car for three years now.. It use to be around 50 lbs.... I change my own oil, and it gets 5w30 mobile 1 all the time? The oil is filled where it needs to be? It is fluctuating around 69-77 right now and at idle around 65 lbs... Is this normal at all?

Sounds like your oil pressure switch is about ready to take a dump..........

Is this the sensor in the back of the intake valley under the intake manifold? Or is there also one near the oil filter?

Yep, it's the one at the back of the intake.

Have you changed oil filters? That might affect the pressure.
Actually, at 70 I thought it would be above 50 psi anyway.

Check pressure with key on and engine off, if it registers anything, your sensor (or wiring) is bad. Most likely the sensor.

No. There's only one oil pressure sensor.

I just replaced my oil prerssure sensor last weekend & I am using a slightly thicker synthetic oil (Castrol Syntec 0w30: close to a 0W-40), and at idle I'm around 40psi, and at 1500RPM it's just a tad over 60psi. Sounds like you're a bit on the high side..Usually when the OPS is bad it's pegged at 80 on the analog gage, and 130 on the DIC...If this happens (won't take long, if it's going) at least you'll know..

Go find yourself a new sensor. Make sure you get one of the "new" brass ones, not the alluminum ones.

That seems high. If you have checked the oil level and the filter is fine, then it is probably the sensor.

Yea, well I checked my oil pressure with the car off.. I never knew I get 35lbs of pressure at the top of the motor with the car off. LOL

Yea I had the damn intake off over the summer for the knock sensor... Its not hard to take off, but should I replace the intake gaskets even though its rubber?
Thanks for the tip on the brass oil sensor! Its been awhile since I had an electrical issue with the car... Knock on wood..

Thanks again.

My original '01 intake gaskets still looked good after 30k miles, but I decided to replace them anyhow for some peace of mind. Next time, I probably would not replace them again.

Did you just change your oil? I would try a changing the filter again, perhaps there is a restriction in yours.

It flows: Oil pump -> filter -> pressure sensor. I'd think a more restrictive filter would mean less pressure.

More restriction = less pressure at the sensor.
