I'm putting Bilstien shocks on my ZO6. On the rear shocks, there is a nut at the top. I need to remove the nut so I can swap the mounting bracket over to the new shock. When I try to remove the nut, the center threaded rod spins.
Is there any way I can remove the nut without an air impact? The threads are rusty too. I'm going in for round two tonight after work.
There should be either a hole in the top of the shock for a hex wrench to fit in, or it will be flat at the top on two sides. Depending on which you have, you'll use a hex wrench or a vise grip to hold it while turning the nut with an opened end box wrench. Spray the threads down with a good lubricant before you go to work and let them soak all day. It should be easier to turn later.
Thinking about it, I may be recalling the front set up..... I actually dont remember having that set up on the rears. I think you should be able to hit the nut with an impact and get it loose. I'd still lube it good before leaving for work.

The top of the rear shock has a slot for a wrench. I have an impact but my compressor don't have the ***** to break it loose. I am going to try and put the top slot of the shock in a vice and hit the nut with an open end wrench. I SUCK WITH TOOLS! Thanks
I went through the same thing when installing my Bilsteins. What I did was take a cut-off wheel and cut through the shock rod so I could remove the upper mount bracket that needs to go on the Bilstein.
There is a bag full of washers and rubber parts with the new Bilstiens. Is it pretty self explanitory where everything goes once the stock shock is disassembled? Where there any Bilstien parts left over? The instructions are vague.
