Default Service Colum Lock

I know, I know, I did search and read up on John's sticky about the column lock issues and all but... i am new to the C5, in fact I just bought it last Thursday and today the error message came up. I am confused. I thought when I would get that message the engine would lock up after i drove over 2mph but it didnt. I also thought that the steering would lock but it doesnt, the wheel is free moving after I removed the key. I can start it and drive without problems so what should I do now? Does this mean the lock plate has already been removed? I read it may be a matter with the battery but I havent been able to check the voltage yet. If I find that it is the battery, after replacing it would the message go away or do I have to clear it?
Any advise would be appriciated.
By the way, its an 2004 6 speed.

It would appear that your car has the last recall only performed on it. The lock plate has been removed and NO FUEL reprogramed (or an edit added to set fuel lock at 255 mph).

But, if it has the K-harness installed (probably), it has malfunctioned and will give you this message. You will have to take out the k-harness and add a CLB (from Corvettes of Houston) to keep from getting these messages.

Okay, I found that the battery was old and weak so I put a new one in. Message is gone HOWEVER... as I was driving home i looked down and my temp gauge was reading 265!! There was not odor or problems driving or warning messages so I am stumped. Can this be related to removing the battery?

Maybe the temperature is correct...Did you check the level in the coolant tank? Are the cooling fans coming on?

That is normal, see below:

C5 Cooling Fans Operation

The low speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fan will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph).
