I have a 2000 A4 Coupe and I hear a pronounced rattling sound when I accelerate. I've had it checked at three locations(2 well known corvette shops and 1 Midas ha!) and they told me it wasn't exhaust but couldn't identify it either. Anyone hear of this before?
if you have cats...they could be breaking up and rattling inside the converter itself...(i had an older car that sounded like a rattle trap when i accelerated)
Okay, dumb question, but have you ruled out pinging? If it's pinging, a can of SeaFoam in the tank, and several full throttle accelerations will cure it. Worked for me!

Yep. Of course describing sounds is very difficult, but it is worth your time to get under the car with a rubber mallet and see what you can find. If it is a cat comming apart, you would likely be getting a TWC Low Efficiency Code. Are you getting a "check engine" light?
I'm heading in to 21st Century Muscle Cars of Dallas to replace my 2:73's with 3:42's this morning and I'll ask them about the cats and pinging. Thanks for your input! I'll let ya'll know what I find out.
They still weren't sure what was causing the rattle but they think it may be either a faulty torque tube or the dampner(?). Which sucks, but it's better than the tranny. They had a few other 2000's and they all had the same sound to a lesser degree. It seems that GM made a change mid way in 2000 on the dampner(?) to resolve the vibration and I suppose mine rolled out before that. I think its about 2 grand to replace the tube so I'll see if I can live with it.
Either way, the 2:73 to 3:42 swap went off without a hitch and the difference is phenomenal. John Page at 21st Century Muscle Cars aka Lingenfelter did an awesome job! Great shop, good people. Anyone in Dallas that needs performance work should look them up.
