Default questions on oil consumption

I have a few questions about oil consumption. One is from what I have read on here, it does not affect everyone, right? I read the tsb bulletin and from what i understand, if it is the rings that are casuing the problems, why do only some of the cars consume oil. Also, if some of the cars are using 1qt per 1000 miles, and you drive the car for 10,000 miles, that is 10 qts. of oil? Where is all this oil going, is it being burned off? One more, why would changing brands of oil say from mobil 1 to amsoil help to eliminate consumption?

Default Re: questions on oil consumption (jpws6)

The 2001 rings tend to flutter above 3,000 rpm, especially under light load. So the problem is mostly on cars that sped a fair amount of time in that condition. And since the A4 will upshift if you let it, the auto tranny cars seldom have the problem.
The oil does get burned in the combusion chambers and can cause carbon problems but I'm not aware of the details.
Changing brands of oil typically does not solve the problem. The solution is to either avoid prolonged operation above 3,000 rpm, or get the new rings under warranty.
My car burned 1 qt of 10W-30 on a heavy-footed road trip of 4,500 miles. Not great, but acceptable.
