I just replaced my Hurst shifter with an MGW thinking it would get rid of a hard shifting (notchy) transmission on my 2000 coupe. It helped some but still is hard shifting. I read a post a few months back about shimming out a cover on the transmission which reduces the load on a detent spring. I did a shearch but couldn't find anything. Has anyone done this shimming or know where the detent spring is located? Thanks for your help.
It's called the "Anti Venom" Mod. You might also want to flush your transmission with new Royal Purple Synchromesh fluid - I noticed an improvement right away.

Just did the AV mod today. I can not believe how much better it shifts. I used 2 13/16" or M20 copper oil drain plug washers. Dorman oiltite part number 65277. I bought mine from Advance Auto Parts. $1.79
I also noticed that the detent plug has roller bearings that were dry and binding. I lubed it up with some clear spray penetrating grease.
I tried the Anti-Venom Mod this past weekend and hated. I could barely tell where neutral was and it was difficult to line it up so that I could get over to Reverse.
If you drive your Vette hard at all, do not do this mod.
It DOES NOT help with the notchy shifts. It only makes movement between gears real lite and sloppy. When you get to the notchy part of the shift, its still just as notchy as before but now your shifter feels like crap.
BTW, I have a lvl 4 M12 transmission, the new B&M Sport Shifter, Ticket performance adjustable master, and a Tex OZ 700 X grip clutch.
I Hated the Anti Venom Mod.

The Anti-Venom modification is adjustable i.e. thickness of the spacer(s) or length of machined modified detent bolt. The shorter the detent bolt or the thicker the spacers the more the tension is relieved. I used just .062. ( Venom's actual part is a modified or shortened .062 aluminum detent bolt).
( note; I recall that the topic of possible damage occuring over time with this modification. That is the extent of memory serving me)
But the 'notchy' feel comes from the tranny but the notchy feel also is ENHANCED but short throw shifters.
I have the C6 Z06 shifters in both C5es and the wife likes the change . But I have always wondered why CF memebers are selling off these Hurst, B&M, MGW, ect ,ect. . Being that the aftermarket shifters are produced with better quality materials and designs over the OEM Corvettes. Why all the complaints?
Recently I purchased a C6 Hurst and added two (2) inches of length to the shift arm and replaced the shifter arm side to side tension springs with the lightest ones from Hurst. I use a 2" dia white shifter ball. The inital results are promising. I now have a very percise ,solid shifter with significantly less notchy feel. Granted that throw length is more like the C6 Z06 ( approx 10% shorter throw than the C5 OEM shifter) and not the Hurst's original 35% shorter throw.

Not sure about long term problems. I made the mod to my 00 and noticed a huge difference and lack of extra effort to shift, especially in 1st and reverse. You can remove the washer if you don't like the feel, because, that's all it is.
I say go for it!
