Default Need Callaway Honker Installation Help

I've got a used Honker almost installed, but it is missing the coupler from the MAF to the throttle body. I figure I will pick up a replacement tomorrow from Zip Corvette.

Also, how the heck do I connect the stock air hose to the Honker?...trying to fit the stock hose "as is" into the Honker is too loose.

When I removed the top radiator cover, this fell out from somewhere under that cover on the passenger side...any idea where it goes?

Finally, the filter is dirty enough that I plan to buy the Callaway cleaning kit. Hope it has good instructions 'cause I don't want to over-oil it! Any filter cleaning tips out there?

Thanks for the help!

The connector from the MAF to the throttle body is a specialized piece from Callaway, and has a slight curve to it. Don't know if ZIP will have this piece. If they don't, contact Callaway, they probably have a few extras laying around.

There is a rubber grommet missing that fits into the Honker. The air hose is then pushed into the grommet for a snug fit. That's why your air hose does not fit tightly into the Honker. Did you leave the grommet in your stock air cleaner housing? If not, you'll need to purchase one.

As for the piece that fell out, it also fell out of mine when I removed the radiator shroud. I know it's some kind of insulator, but I couldn't figure out where it goes. I left it out and I haven't had any problem in 3 years. I wouldn't worry about it.

As far as cleaning the filter element goes, just follow the instructions that come with the kit. Do you have the Green filter or the K&N? There is a different cleaning/oiling kit for each element type.

Hope this helps. And by the way, you will like the Honker.

The piece you have shown is part of the radiator top shroud. It holds the radiator in position at the top so it doesn't move forward and back. Probably okay without it but it wouldn't hurt to look at another car in person to see where it goes.

Thx for the replies.

I have the green filter and just got the green cleaning kit.

I am set on all my issues except for the Callaway MAF to throttle body coupler. I am trying to track one down, so if anyone has one available please let me know!

Thought I had a coupler for you but I just checked my Callaway box and it must have been left up at ECS when they did my H/C package and I converted to an LS2 TB. In any event, call Callaway and they will send you one.

That rubber piece fits to the underside lip of the radiator shroud on the passenger side between the shroud and the A/C line. You can see the A/C line running past the coolant recovery tank in the top section of your first pic above. That line runs right up to the radiator shroud. I think that rubber isolator protects the A/C line so the shroud does not rub a hole in the line.

Good luck with your Honker install. Looks like you just about have it buttoned up.

Another note. As someone else has already pointed out, you need to pull the rubber grommet for the air hose off your old intake cover and put in on the Honker cover. Take some WD-40 and lube up the grommet before you try to insert the air hose as it is a tighter fit than the stock airbox. Once it is on, do not remove it or you will damage the grommet. Ask me how I know, I have gone through two of these grommets doing regular maintenance on the filter. If you pull it out, the grommet tears in half.

Also, if you want a cleaner install with MAF sensor wire, take the stock loom hold down off near the radiator shroud and double up the wire loom under the TB and zip tie just under the driver side fuel rail cover. Nice and clean as per the instructions.

Good luck with it.

Is the coupler between to MAF and TB really a unique design from Callaway? I have a honker kit I need to install as well, and I'm missing the same piece. I picked up a standard silicone coupler of the proper dimensions for the MAF and TB, but obviously its straight, not curved. I haven't done a test fit, but I'm thinking it should work fine??

FYI, here is a picture of PewtVette's Honker using a non-Callaway coupler. So this shows it can be done. I am just chasing the Callaway one at this point for my installation. I gotta find something soon so I can see what this thing does for me!

Got mine off of siliconeintakes.com for 12.99. It's a reducer that's 4.0" on the TB side, and 3.75" on the MAF side. Can't beat that price, and it was a quick ship. Thanks for the photo above...it looks like my reducer will work.

You might want to contact Mike Vendetto at Callaway, "mcv" on this forum.

Let us know how it works out..you will most likely tackle the install project before I get around to mine.

So far, the silicone coupler is not working too good for me. I had to cut a small notch in the silicone to fit the MAF...that came out ok. But for trying to connect to the throttle body, the angle of connection causes problems for the silicone, most likely requiring additional trimming to fit properly. I guess this is why the Callaway coupler/elbow has the 'bend' in it that was mentioned. I am going to order the Callaway part, and in the mean time I will keep working on the silicone trimming.

You can see in my photo below the top of the silicone coupler hits the TB before the bottom, so the top would have to be trimmed to allow it to move further back. I am not sure if PewtVette had to trim his or not, but his has a good tight fit (see photo a few posts back).

Yeah, not sure why the silcone coupler fits better on the car above? It's not the first time I've seen it either...which is why I orderd one. I suppose I might have to swing over to Callaway and get theirs?

Brian, I didn't have do do any trimming on my coupler but I did install it a little cockeyed downward so that it sits away from the tb at the top (and closer in at the bottom). Once it's clamped into position it works just fine. It looks like my coupler is different than yours. Yours (which looks good) has a smooth tranistion from one end to the other. Mine does not. But I think mine is a little more forgiving in the middle- where the transition occurs. Does this make any sense?

I ordered a replacement coupler from Callaway when I bought a used Honker that was missing the coupler. I think it was about $25.00.

Makes sense Jay, plus looks like you just did a better installation job that I did! I am taking the easy way out and ordering the Callaway part

Where is the IAT sensor on this setup? Is it part of the MAF? what year is this engine?
