Could someone please direct me to a site that I can purchase two mufflers. I have the stock exhaust system in my 98 M6. Is this called a "catback", just buying the mufflers? I want a little more throaty sound. Thanks
The term "Cat Back" is a bit of a misnomer, that has developed out of a need for a convenient term! What you are referring to is what is referred to as a cat back! The cats have a long section welded on at the factory that is referred to as the mid-pipe or H-pipe. These pipes end in flanges just ahead of the axles. The factory mufflers and all the "Cat Back" systems have a pipe that goes up over the axle and turns into the muffler. the factory makes this a one piece assembly whereas the after market sets are separate pieces. This makes it easier to ship,,and I think easier to install. Hope this clears up the confusion for you!! Many vendors here as well as Mid America and other catalog sellers as well as the manufacturers have web sites(Google is your friend) Borla, Corsa,BB etc. You might even want to check the parts for sale here on the forum,,and save some money,as most all are stainless steel and unless damaged are just as good as new ones!!!

As Corvette owners we get screwed when it comes to things like a cat-back exhaust or headers--often referred to as the " Corvette Tax" A set of headers which are virtually the same for a Camaro are $300 -but for a corvette they are $900---Similarly a catback can quite often run $800 for a Corvette---
Just a suggestion-----Don't run any mufflers !!!!---Buy a universal short style X pipe ( about $50 )--and replace the stock H pipe--It will fit perfectly in the same spot--Then have your muffler shop run 2 1/2" pipes STRAIGHT out to the back--this get rid of all the horrible turns in the stock exhaust flow--finish up with 2-- 3 or 3 1/2 stainless long tips (12-15")---($60)
You now have a free flowing straight thru exhaust syatem--I did this to mine---Total cost with parts and welding and some 2 1/2" pipe (I furnished the X pipe) was $50 + $60 + $100 = $210 !!!!!!!
The X- pipe really QUIETS the system down--and gives your car a racey throaty rasphy note--I'm so tired of that low flowmaster rumble--It"s overdone--
Unbeleiveably it is NOT that loud---On my hds/cam car i would consider it "perfect"--On a stock hds/cam car it would even be a bit quieter
I get so many people ask about my exhaust because it sounds so different and so cool---If it is too loud for you you can later have them install some shorty Shoenfeld race mufflers that easily weld in--

So the stock cats are your mufflers? I'd like to hear it also.

Very interesting. So, the "H" pipe is factory? I should replace the "H" pipe with an "X" pipe and run straight pipes from there? Thanks man

You can, yes, it is loud though. Several vendors make pipes designed to bolt from the x pipe to the back of the car, those are what's referred to as "Catbacks" several even make strait pipe sets (I've got them on my car). Wish you were closer I"ve got a bassani X pipe that i just don't want to ship.
good luck in your quest.. my suggestion: listen to a lot of things and ride in an as many as you can before you decide.
This gives me alot to think about. I sure appreciate everyone taking the time to post. Besides, half of the fun of these cars is researching and shopping, right?
The hole that connects the 2 pipes in the STOCK H pipe is a joke !! About a 1/2" diameter-----REALLY !!!!!----A shorty X pipe will also add some RWHP--Maybe 3-5---I'll try to get a sound clip to post of my exhaust--
