Default Refilling Radiator after Draining...

Sounds like a dumb question, but how do you refill the radiator after you drain it?

It there something simple I'm missing here?

I have always filled mine just like other cars.

Fill reservoir a little above the cold mark, start the engine and let it idle until you see the level drop. Refill to the cold mark, replace the cap, and drive it until up to full operating temperature.
Let it cool overnight, then bring the reservoir level up to the cold mark.
Done.

Hey guys,

I am planning to drain my coolant this weekend. I purchased Prestone brand Dex-Cool coolant. Is this OK or should I stick with the GM stuff?

Prestone is now an authorized manufacturer of Dexcool, and it is GM approved.
The story I heard was that Texaco Havoline, the original manufacturer of Dexcool, moved their manufacturing out of the United States, and a lot of our local parts suppliers quit carrying it. Even Walmart used to carry Texaco brand, and I noticed it disappeared from the shelf and was replaced by Prestone.
Chances are that the Dexcool in the GM bottle at the dealer was made by Prestone, so you can buy the same stuff at Walmart.

I was also hesitant to buy it, but I just changed my coolant last month, and I was out of Texaco Haveline, so I used the Prestone Dexcool. The Prestone even has the blue GM logo on the bottle, and it says GM Approved, not just Dexcool compatible.

Well RATS! I was fond of using that Havoline 50/50 Dex Cool mix for refilling the radiators. If I can't find that anymore, does Prestone have a similar product?

When Chuck did my tune (Replaced the thermo too) he had this great machine that put a vacume on the system...then when released the vacume pulled all the fluid it needed back into the system.. he also noted that thevette is kinda strange in that not like other cars you cant tell how much fluid is actually in the system just by looking at the overflow.

Case in point my overflow showed "just a bit low" but I was actually 2qts low....

Just an FYU

Before your flush and change, you may want to get the replacement drainplug, the one with the little handle on it. It makes future changes a lot easier too. If you havn't done a change yet you might be a little surprised and annoyed when you have to wrestle with the darn stock plug. Do a search on this.
Also, do the job cold or you can get burned. It's messy the first time.

Yes, Walmart carries the undiluted Dexcool and the 50/50 premixed Prestone Dexcool. Expect to pay about the same price for each, but obviously with the premixed, you are only getting 1/2 gallon of antifreeze insted of a full gallon. Last time I looked, a gallon was $10 or $11.

I opted to buy a gallon of undiluted coolant and a gallon of distilled water for less than $1.00, to make 2 gallons of 50/50.
