Column Lock help... i know i know
I had the service lock issue and after way too much dicking around and having my car at two different dealerships I have a part number and a description of the part and I'm trying to find it anywhere. GM doesnt have any and nobody is making them apparently so I'm at a real loss on what to do.
Part # 19244028 from GM "harness kit for steering column lock"
do you guys know of any dealer or service center or distributor that might have this? The first dealership replaced the actual column lock mech after telling me the repair would only need a harness and relay, so I had the car moved to a local dealership that i have a good relationship with. They have been great but they just cant get the part, so I'm hunting. Thanks much for any help.
"Q Is there any solution for this problem?
A Yes; have the recall done if you have an A4 car or install a Column Lock Bypass (CLB) on MN6 & MN12 cars BEFORE the problem occurs. Once it fails, you may not be able to fix it without GM repair."
I will go ahead and get a CLB if it will solve the existing problem, but that wasn't the impression I got from the sticky.
I will check the grounds as well. Thank you.
The part number you listed does not show to be a good number.
The reason people say install the bypass before the column locks is because you have to get the column unlocked before it can be installed. If your lockplate has been removed and the column cannot lock anyway, then you do not have to overcome that problem.
If your column still locks, then you might want to get the dealer to remove the lockplate and install a new Harnness K relay. Then you can replace it with the aftermarket version if you want.
Installing the bypass will not unlock the column. You have to get the lock pin to retract, then you can disconnect the actuator and install the bypass relay. The aftermarket relay just connects to the main wiring harness and leaves the actuator disconnected.
Does your column still lock or not? You never say exactly what your problem is. If your are just getting an error message, or if you cannot drive the car.

As stated, since it appears that the lock plate has been removed, installing a working GM K-Harness or an aftermarket “CLB” will get you on your way.
IF your column lock motor itself is working, it could be hooked back up to get you going. (Column will not actually lock IF the lock plate has been removed)
NOTE: A CLB should be installed as soon as possible to remove the troublesome column-lock motor out of the equation.
The purpose of the CLB is to replace (simulate) the column lock motor assembly. (Actually the micro switches within the column lock motor assembly) The “Column Lock Bypass” (CLB) fools the computer (BCM) into thinking that the column lock motor is cycling properly).
When installing the CLB (or K-Harness) it must first be synchronized to the computer (BCM). This means the switches in the CLB must be in the correct position depending if the ignition is “On” or “Off”. In other words, the computer wants to see if the column-lock motor’s LOCKING PIN is extended or retracted. It senses this by detecting the On/Off position of the switches within the motor assembly. The same holds true when re-installing (plugging back in) the actual column-lock motor.
Lastly the final solution to guarantee that the column issue will never strand you is two fold –
1. Remove the Column Lock Plate under the steering wheel.
2. Reprogram the BCM to a fuel cut-off at 256MPH. (The max allowed by the BCM)
Find someone with “EFI Live” or “HP Tuners” (or a “Tech2”) to reprogram the MPH in the BCM. (Mostly only the dealers have the “Tech2”, and they will NOT reprogram the fuel cut-off due to perceived liability issues as dictated from GM)
Take care & Good Luck
