Default another lowering question... stock bolts

Ok, so I've done the research and followed the directions I've found on a number of sites....including here.

The front bolts ( especially the drivers ) are not moving. The passenger one DID, but I put it back once I couldn't get the driver's side to budge.

One member suggested placing a jack under the leaf spring and putting pressure there to make it move easier, but that hasn't worked either.

any suggestions?

I'm trying to get the car done so I can get it on the rack and align it.

TIA

It'll grab it and not let go until it turns. Trust me, if your bolt is as stubborn as mine was it's going to get stripped and you'll need that socket.

1. Jack the front of the car up and put it on stands.
2. Remove the front tires.
3. Put a jack under each spring and put pressure on them until the car starts to try to lift off the stands. (do not lift it off the stands)
4. Lift both sides with equal pressure at the same time so the car does not fall off the stands.
5. Spray oil on the rubber bushing at the end of the bolt.
6. Turn the bolt.
This link is for lifting the Vette but it has some good pictures in it.
Hope this is of some help to you.

You have to jack up the spring at the very end closest to the bolt. Use a small piece of wood or hockey puck to achieve this. Make sure the rubber bushing isn't stuck to the control arm. I just had this problem with my driver-side bolt, and had to soak it with PB Blaster for almost 24 hours before it would turn ... soaking it is key.

thanks for the advice and the link

After letting it sit overnight with the PB, I tried again but nothing. I didn't get the jack in the right spot or put enough pressure.

I sprayed it again, and sprayed the bottom bushing too. I'll let it sit until tomorrow and try again.

It's weird that some break free and some don't (bolts). I wound up shearing the bolt head off (drivers side BTW), said screw it, and upgraded to C5 Z06 springs front & rear.

One thing about it is that the lowering screws are sitting on their threads without preload and after time the probably hammer themselves into a distorted state and we wonder why they lock up.

They should have put a locking nut under the spring and that would probably have solved it. You never want to put threads into a position where they aren't preloaded....

I did the same exact thing, except I rounded the bolt and the Craftsman bolt extracter kit shown above was no help at all. I cut the bottom of the bolt out with a sawzall and had a really low ride. I got sick of being bounced around, so I ended up grabbing the Z06 springs, sways, metal end links, a Zip lowering kit and some Biltstein shocks for the lower stance and I am currently in the process of installing it all.
To the OP, that bolt is a mother, and soaking it is the only way I think it will come out. If it is still uncooperative, I think one guy on here had to use a pipe wrench and a hammer.

Good Luck
Chris

Thanks Chris,
I think if I can't get it by the end of the weekend, it's going to the place where I'm getting it aligned and seeing if they can help. I'd rather them screw it up in their shop with more resources at their disposal than me do it and have the car sit.

UPDATE: After finally getting enough pressure on the spring, the driver's side came loose. it was tight at first, but loosened up quick.
The passenger side was able to be hand turned once I got the spring loaded as well.

Thanks guys!
Love this forum
