Howdy folks. Quick question, also posting it to the scan and tune forum. I have a stock '98 A4 coupe. I've read the information on the Hypertech and Predator handheld units, and wonder if they will give me any assist. I'd like to firm up the shifts, lower the temp the fans come on (with the 160 thermostat) and generally wake this up just a little bit. I don't plan on doing much more than I've already done to the car. Twin tube intake and jettisoned the accordion piece on the TB. What do you think ? Or maybe a mail-order tune from a reputable tuner ?

If you choose a handheld than the Predator would be the choice. Much more versatile. But bang for the buck I'd do the mail order tune if you are done with the mods. When you're really really done with the mods then a dyno tune.
I've got a Hypertech. I wanted to do just what you're suggesting...so I did. And after a little while I thought to myself...'Ya know, I liked it a heck-of-a-lot better shifting nice and smooth'. So, I took the tune off.
I don't think the Predator works on a 98. The HTPP3 will work, but a custom tune will be much better. I hear ChuckCow tunes are great, and he also does mail order tunes for little money.

You are correct! Predator does not make programmers for '98 or older. I uploaded the HTPP3 (and installed 160 thermostat) on my '98 and noticed a real difference in low end torque, throttle response and overall power. Well worth the money.
You can control shift times (auto), calibrate speedometer, fan timing, and a few other options.

Yup, sorry guys, I was reading all about all the units and realized the Predator was probably the better unit but, then read that it's not for use with older than 99, but, it didn't take, obviously. So, it looks like it's between a mail-order tune and a HTPP3. Do they really make that much difference ? Can you really feel the diference ?
