Default Oil leak

Last weekend I joined the ranks of C5 owners. '03c5 coupe. When I got home after the 300 mile drive I smelled oil burning. Found oil dripping from the bell housing area and now believe it to be coming from the area of the oil pressure sender but I can not see any oil on the sender. Where do they commonly fail? Is there something else in the area prone to leak?

Yeah, the rear main seal. How can you tell no oil is on the OPS? Did you pull the intake?

Inspection mirror and watched while motor running. I have looked up inside the bell housing and all looks dry. No oil on the flywheel or anywhere inside that I can see.

I had a leak in the same area. It came out to be the 2 small bolts on the oil pan. They were loose and never would stay tighten. I got longer bolts and hasnt leaked for over 4 years now. Good Luck

I can see oil on the block around the oil pressure sender but can not see the sender leaking. It appears this leak is on top of the motor some where and running down the bell housing.

After the intake is off what are the possibilities...valley cover gasket? something leaking on the head? any oil lines in this area? It's been a few years since I was into a small block and never an ls1.

heads, valley cover, cam sensor, OPS...no oil lines. Probably should pick up a service manual if you are new to LS series engines. The days of just cranking bolts down have been over for some time.

Didn't take long to see this is not the old small block. I'll dig into it this evening. I have read a lot of post but nothing about leaks in this area other than the OPS. Where does the OPS leak when it fails? Thanks for the input and will post what I find.

They often leak from the area around the electrical connector.
I doubt if you could see this with an inspection mirror though.

Pulling the intake is the best place to start, as lucky already suggested. It's not a big deal at all.

If you're a DIY person and new to LSx engines, I agree that a set of shop manuals are a must!

Getting the manuals is a good move:

Until then: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...y-vectorz.html

Good luck!

Thanks for all the help guys. Turns out the OPS was finger tight. No big deal on manifold R&R...even for first timer.

Welcome Grandude -

Fill out your profile. Full car info can help in diagnosing problems and the members here like to know whom they’re talking to. Especially what general area you’re from.

Is this your first Corvette?

Best advice has already been given - that being; Purchase the GM Service Manuals (Three Volume Set) - It is imperative to anyone who services the Corvette.

You can purchase new set from Gene Gulley at GMPartsHouse.com a forum sponsor or you can look in the C5 Parts For Sale section of the forum.

The DVD version of the service manuals is also an option. (The dealers use the DVD version as it covers ALL GM cars & trucks 1998 –2005 and 1997 Corvette also)

See this thread - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...al-on-dvd.html

Hint – MegaUpLoad is reputed to be much faster. Don’t know personally as I purchased the Original DVD sometime ago.
