Has anyone actually taken off the bottom part of the rear view mirror? There is a spring and a washer that holds the two pieces together but looks and feels like once I take the washer off, you'll never be able to get it back on again. Is this a "Once you take it off, you have to buy a whole new rear view mirror" piece?
Thanks
I would not try AGAIN unless it was really nessary. Thay are being repaired with parts from Lowes. Small threaded pipe from the lamp dept. Some are drilling a hole and putting a pin through it. It's a PITA. Why do you need to take it apart?
The base of the mirror is not designed to be removed.
In fact, quite a few forum members have had the mirror fall off, and have had to come up with alternate methods to re-attach it.
If you do a search you should be able to find one or two methods.
If you mess with the one time press on clip, you will break it, and will have a bigger problem than you have now.

Thanks for the reply guys. I wanted to have both pieces re-painted professionally and best way for that was to have them separated, but not going to work out.
I'm glad I stopped while I was ahead. I had a feeling something wasn't right, so good to know that clip is not designed to come off and then force a bad situation.
I just panted one for my car. I rotated the base just a few degrees, that causes the space between the housing and base to open up enough for the painting process. Can't tell it from the factory paint.
