Default Dash & running light problem, Multifunction switch?

My rear running lights are inop both with and with out the headlights on. The front running lights work as they should. Also the dash lights work fine during the power on self test, but go out when the headlights are turned on. I’ve checked the #6 fuse and it’s good, as it should be since the front lights work. I suspect it’s the multifunction switch, is there any other troubleshooting I can do to confirm it? All other lights work as they should.

Thanks,
George

If it is the Multifunction Switch, the Rear Park Lamps, Front Park Lamps, and Dash Lamps will come on when the Twilight Sentinel is activated.

If that's the case, check this out:

Please excuse my ignorance, but I don't know anything about the twilight sensor. I just checked my options and I do not have the twilight sentinal on my car.

"Twilight Sentinel" not Sensor. Do you have an owner's manual?

Now, what year is it? Can you do troubleshooting with a multimeter?

It's a '99. I have the manual. This is my wife's car, so I'm not familiar with it. I've gone through the options on the DIC and I don't get twilight. While I had the manual in the car I checked a few other lighting modes. I tried to turn on the fog lamps, they don’t work. I can see the lamps were installed but they don’t come on and the light in the button does not come on. Also, I can’t seem to get the Parade Mode to work, but I find the manual poorly written. I’ve tried it a few ways with no luck. I can test with a multimeter, but I’m not sure where to start. Thanks for help!

Fuse #6 in which fuse panel? Underhood or passenger footwell?

Park Lamp Switch. C209 (Connector) under Steering Column, Brown wire, Circuit #308, should have 12V with Park Lamps turned on. Does it?

Check everything TWICE (at least) but it sounds like the multifunction switch to me. I just replaced one on my wife's car.
If it turns out you do need one, I picked up a new one off of the auction site for around $100, and they are pretty darn simple to install.

I checked the brown wire, (mine was light brown,) at the connector under the steering column and no power. I tried it in both the parking lights and headlamp position. Does this confirm that the multifunction switch is malfunctioning?

I'll throw in 2 cents worth here, the small light inside the fog lamp switch is a seperate path from the fog lamp relays in the engine compartment relay/fuse box. It means that the fog lamp relays did not turn on. The headlamp switch will turn off the fog lamps if the high beams were on and of course they won't turn on with the parking lamps off either. It certainly sounds like the multifunction/headlamp switch. There is a repair on it or you can replace it. The steering wheel does not have to come off.

gglmn, look at the schematic, if you have 12V in on C209 pin Z (orange wire), and NO 12V out on C209 pin R (brown wire), the switch is bad. If you have no voltage on pin Z, then you need to check the voltage on Fuse #6 in the IP Fuse Block. Can't be all that complicated!!!!!!!!
