drain and refill the coolant in the radiator every 5 years or 100,000 miles and every 3 years or 36,000 miles thereafter

I'm confused about this statement from that site. If the coolant lasts 5 years or 100,000 miles then why would it need to be changed every 3 years or 36,000 miles thereafter? That makes no sense to me.

Because like many folks you may have a car that gets driven very little, so they are recommending that you change the coolant based on time if you don't cover that many miles. In other words, change it at five years and then every three years thereafter and ignore the mileage.

But the coolant is good for 5 years or 100,000 miles. Again I don't get how 3 years or 36,000 miles comes into the equation.

After nominal wear and tear more contaminents find their way into the system. Sort of the same thing with my exercise as I age...takes more, more often !

Hi Shylor -

That statement is take verbatim from the GM manual. IT is also in your owners manual.

I don't think your car will dissolve to a puddle of unusable muck if you decide to not spend the $20 and 40 mins every three years.....

But it still makes no sense to me. What is the point of claiming a 5 year/ 100,000 mile coolant if they want it changed sooner? I might as well go back to regular coolant for the first change then, at least that would cost me less money.

Best bet is to contact GM directly and argue with them. When you get your results from GM please post them here for all of us to know.

Probably only a 5 year coolant in a NEW vehicle.

I have looked on the container for the coolant and it still says it is a 5 year coolant. Doesn't say anything about 5 years only for a new vehicle. If it really is only a 3 year coolant than this is false advertising, that's all I'm saying.
