Default ATI----- DO IT YOURSELF?

have they come up with a way to key the crank? any special electrical tools needed? seems like a day job (long day but that's OK) Will a stock A4 handle the power? Will the drive shafts handle the power?

they "say" you don't need to key the crank. I would however. Have to take the crank out. PTI has a way to do it with the crank still in there, but they are mum on any detail  I betit has been done before....
bunch of f=body guy have another way to do it with cutting the wasjer down... go to ls1tech and look for blackbird t/a (sp?)...

A4 will handle it , but not for to long.
Shafts will handle it.

Just ordered my kit thru a race shop in overlandpark, KS where ATI is located.
In fact that's where ATI did their dynoing of the kit. I was told ATI had found a co. that will keyway the crank. They will soon offer it as an option on their kit & those that already have theirs installed can also get it done.

Hope it's not just hogwash!... They told me after I ordered my kit though...so it couldn't have been just empty marketing scheme.

The balancer should not need to be keyed to the crank as the Procharger system runs off of the factory accessory belt. Under load the 6 ib belt will start slipping before the balancer would slip. That being said, ATI Procharger is not going to offer this service but ATI balancers does offer a way to lock the balancer to the crank by way of dowel pins. I would contact them if you plan on adding an external blower drive (other supercharger systems maybe) or are going for extreme power levels.

Welcome to the CF Chris. I guess I must have misunderstood what you were telling me the other day.

Got my headers, still don't know what I'm gonna use. LT belanger or Shorties ? I figure I'll have plenty of power w/ the SC & probably won't miss the diff. The important thing's I'll save $400- 500. Anybody, your 02 is appreciated.

I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Am I correct in stating that if the balancer slips the timing changes on a crank fired ignition?

Will the output shafts be able to handle the power also?

Is the crank trigger in the front or rear of the motor? Pics if possible would be appreciated.

This is going to sound horrible, but what does "key the crank" mean? I know this is probably like asking what are tires, but for some reason I don't know what the phrase refers to. An explanation would be greatly appreciated.

most engines have a slot in the crankshaft and the harmonic balancer that hold a "key"
the key fits in both slots
this keeps the balancer from turning on the crank

No problem man. Which ever header is fine :)

As for the keying of the crank, from what I have found out the ATI (balancer ppl) have come up with a way of drilling a hole partially in the crank and partially in the pulley and then you tap a dowell pin in place to lock the two from moving. Pardon me if I am not totally accurate in my decription as I have yet to see one in person. The main advantage to this is the crank does not have to come out of the motor!

Later,

Chris

I can see doing this. Sounds easy . Do you need a 90 degree drill or will a reg drill clear?
