Default Clb ?

I've looked at the sticky but I would like someone to answer my question directly.

I have a 97 A4 which had the GM recall done. The steering wheel does not lock, so they took the locking plate out.

I purchased a clb from adaptive technology it came with a cigaret lighter adapter.

My questions are
1. do I remove the GM K harness?
2. do I use the cig lighter adapter?
3. I'm an old guy with a bad back and knees so, is there someone in central Mich that would be willing to help me do the install?

thanks

1) The CLB will replace the K Harness.
2) You don't need the cig lighter adapter if you pulll fuse 25 per instructions in the attached link.

Follow these instructions and you can't go wrong.

If I have the "more reliable" blk k harness, do you still recomend changing it for the clb?

On a 97 A4 leave it alone. The K-harness is fine as long as everything is working properly. If its the black one dont mess with it. If its the white Tyco relay your call. What you have to remember is the CLB dosnt always work in the 97s and 98s. Sometimes they will cause more problems than the k-harness. Old saying is if its not broke dont fix it.......

I had never heard that before. (about the 97s & 98s) I guess I'll carry the clb in my glovebox incase I get stranded some where and then I'll have to change it. Until then I'll leave it alone. That will be a good excuse not to let the wife take the car alone

Steve –

The BLACK (relay box) K-Harness is reputed to be much more reliable than the WHITE (relay box) version.

If you are sure that the locking plate in the steering column has been removed, then it doesn’t matter if the locking pin of the motor assembly is retracted or extended. So don’t worry about the cigar lighter adaptor or pulling the fuse.

Having a (spare) CLB on hand while using the K-harness sounds like a plan – I say go with it. Keep the (spare) CLB in the car!

Yes, SOME of the 97’s & 98’s do seem to have problems with the CLB, but I don’t know what percentage have the problems.

I have a 98 A4. Mine was the black one. Went out and GM was nice enough to install another one for me for $500. Took it out and installed the CLB and have no problems at all. Took the K harness and put it in the trunk for a just in case thing.

This get's more confusing as I go. Now I've read that some of the earlier "fixes" used 2 relays, one under the passenger foot well and 1 in the usaul k harness location. It's been said that the 2 relay "fixes" have trouble with CLBs. Is this right? If so how do you correct that problem? I have also read about the clb getting out of time with the computer What's an old guy to do?

Hey Steve, I have a 97 A4 with the k-Harness 14,000 miles and over 2yrs and not a problem. The 2 relay set ups as far as I know were only in the M6's, Bill Curlee could add more as he is the electical guru around here. Drive and enjoy and keep the clb just incase........
