I have 1997 C5 with a A4 transmission. The transmission leaks a small amount. This leak only occurs after the car has been sitting for couple of days and the car is cold. The leak do not occur if the car is used every day. Any one out the have any hints to what the problem may be? The fluid is red and appears to be coming from the rear of the car.
I had the exact same problem with my A4 1997. I had some seals replaced. They had to drop the transmission, but did not have to go internal. I will see if I can find my bill and will get back to you.
Hey Mike Mercury, going for the carrier swap in the morning, I only have new O rings, didn't pick up the large alum and rubber "seal plate," do you think I need it, or just remove old one carefully like you did?

My car had 2000 miles on it when I did the swap; so I felt it safe to reuse the existing plate/seal assembly. But Mike Norris reused the existing seal on a car that had many more miles on it than mine.
To remove it, I used a small pry bar inserted in the seal center hole and pryed up a little around the entire circumference..... going around a few times until it finally came out. There is a small gap between the disk and the carrier case; just enough to get a pry bar into.
The outer edge of the 6" disk has an "O" ring. wipe some oil around the new carriers casting to help the "O" ring slide back in without tearing it.
I fully seated the disk/seal assembly into the new carrier by tapping it down with a hammer .... striking on a piece of wood.
I just assumed it was transmission because it was coming from the back, but the fluid wasn't as red as I expected...it was more clear looking. Whatever it was, it fixed my problem.
