Default C5 TECH AND OTHERS PLEASE RESPOND

I brought my '01 C5 Coupe into the dealership because my adjustable steering column was groaning when extending. The car was at the dealership for 4 days because they said that they were waiting for fp #26080362 to fix the problem. Today they told me that it may be another week before they get the part, so I told them I would pick up my car and they can notify me when the part arrives.

Upon arrival at the dealership, my car was not ready, so my service rep asked the kid who drives the cars up to go get my car. He asked him if he washed it and put the column back together. The kid said yes, and went to get the car. Well, the wash job should have been the first sign of bad news. The car was just hosed off and not even dried. On second thought, I am glad they did not wipe on my baby!

I packed up and left with no hard feelings. I immediately sensed that the steering felt funny. It seemed like it required more effort to turn at low speed and less effort to turn at high speed. Now, I know the Magnasteer system is supposed to work opposite of this from literature and owning 2 of these C5's. My question is this...Is it possible that something in the disassembly or reassembly of the steering column could cause such a problem? Does the steering sensor have any affect on this operation or is it solely for AH input? Is it possible that the steering needs to be recalibrated? If so, how do I go about getting this communicated to the dealership and getting something done about it. I am a bit hesitant to go to the dealer right away, because I have been driving a rental Tahoe for the last few days and that could be why the steering feels funny to me. I don't know, but your thoughts and input are much appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

I would tell the dealer your problem and ask if you can drive one of their Vettes to see if it was just from driving a different vehicle for a while or if something is wrong

Ouch...Not knowing how far they went into the column makes it tough to answer. One possibility is that if they removed the column lock plate,it is possible that one of the upper column bearings dropped out of the plastic bearing race, and is wedged in the steering shaft, causing high steering effort. This can happen if one is not careful because when you remove the lock plate the steering shaft can be inedvertantly pulled upward allowing one of the ball bearings to drop out of the bearing race...(I speak from experience)

If you had a fault with the steering sensor, bells and whistles would be going off :yesnod:
