Default "Pull Key and Wait 10 Seconds"

What triggers this message and what does this action accomplish? If you don't, I believe the car dies if you try to drive off.
How does the action correct the initial problem? I had just install the CLB, but got this message on first start up. It did not occur on the second attempt.
I'm concerned about future reoccurrences. I did have the early recall preformed, which was a reprogram only but no K harness. Thanks

Triggered when the pellet on the key is not read correctly. I think you do get it the 1st time after CLB install.

When you remove the key from the ignition the BCM senses that and sends a lock signal to the Actuator or in your case to the CLB. It the BCM gets a completed signal back it sets the lock state in its memory. When you insert the key into the ignition the BCM sends a unlock signal. If it gets the completed signal back it clears the locked state in its memory. The CLB being little more than an electronic relay simply takes the signal it receives from the BCM and turns it around back to the BCM as a completed signal thereby keeping the BCM happy.

As a part of installing the CLB you somehow got the BCM in an out of sync state where it thought the column was locked when you inserted the key into the ignition and put up the message.

Your car is a 98 and some of the early cars (1997 - 2000) had problems with the error message poping up when a CLB is installed. Usually if the car is going to have an issue with the CLB it happens all the time. Since the message is now cleared you hopefull will be all set.
and a weak battery can cause a lot of strange things too !

I get that message once in a blue moon and pulling the key always clears it. Note that I have a CLB installed and I never get the "service column lock" message. So, I attribute it to the pellet in the key not getting read correctly.

Thanks for the info:

Is the "Pull Key......." always associated with the column locking and unlocking communications? Prior to installing the CLB, I had gotten that error message just prior to the "Service Column Lock" (after I reinserted the key the second time). I assume if I don't do as instructed (pull key and wait) it will shut off the fuel when attempting to drive off in excess of 2mph?

You are correct. By having no K harness or other GM stuff and then installing the CLB you are ahead of the game.

HOWEVER, to answer your question. The reason the fuel shut shutoff is a factor is because GM flashed your computer and put it in there when it wasn't there before! GM does this as their version of a safety measure. Oddly this is usually done after the K harness recall has been done and fails. For whatever the reason they did the re-flash, you can be sure the fuel cutoff was incorporated into it. It's the main reason they do the re-flash. This way when the car fails and the message comes up again (notice I said WHEN) the car will die before it gets over 2 mph and hopefully you or the car will not be harmed. It's really a crude and only partial way to bubble gum the problem.

To be 100% effective in fixing your problem, you would need to get your computer re-flashed/tuned and have the fuel shutoff that GM put in (when they flashed your computer) changed to 255 mph (the max setting allowed in the tuning program). Any reputable tuner can easily do this. This will prevent in the case you get the message again, any type of mishap and the car falling into the state it feels the column is locked up and then goes to 2mph fuel-shutoff mode.

NOTE: BE SURE TO ONLY DO THIS LAST THING once you know you can't have the column lock up. Many recommend removing the lockup ring, this way it is impossible. GM also removes the ring in one of the later recall's if none of the previous recalls works to fix the problem.

Hope this helps.
Jeff
