Inst Mileage reading haywire

I have a 97 coupe with about 88,000 miles on it...well taken care of, runs great. I have been having a problem with the reading on my Instant fuel MPG reading.....As Im driving along the reading will jump from 100 mpg to 44 mpg to 55 mpg to 29 mpg and just keep going all over the place. I had the dealer reset the code on my radio a few weeks ago after I replaced the battery....seemed to work fine for a few days them Kaput. Any ideas on what to repair...look for....anything ?
