Default C5 check engine light/transmission

I bought a C5 a few weeks ago – my 5th vette and my second C5. 6 speed convertible.
The check engine light keeps coming on. Before I realized that I could turn it out myself I had two different mechanics come out. They both said the error code had something to do with the transmission. Something that GM did to increase their average mpg on the corporate level. Also something about it’s supposed to shift from 1st to 4th gear if driving conditions warrant it. That sounds really odd.
Has anyone ever heard of this?

It's called "CAGS", perform a search on the forum, "google" it, or read the owner's manual.

As mentioned above, CAGS is a feature that forces you to shift from 1-4 under certain conditions. Many people install a CAGS Eliminator to disable this feature. You may either have a problem with the solenoid circuit that is involved, or (more likely) the previous owner installed a CAGS Eliminator, and it has failed.

Default Cags

Thanks to both of you. Reading about CAGS here on this formum has provided a wealth of information. In my opinion CAGS is ridiculous. I equate it to "big brother" government telling me how to drive my car.

One other question. Since I did figure out how to turn off the check engine light, when I go get it inspected are they going to be able to pull up a history code that they will have to fail the inspection? I read on one thread that disconnecting the battery for more than 5 minutes will erase the history codes.

I do not see how any state insoections would care about that, but just to give you peace of mind here is how to display then reset the codes:

Turn the key to the ON position, but don't start the engine. Clear any present messages by pressing the RESET button. Hold the OPTIONS button down, and press the FUEL button 4 times. This will get you into the CODES section of the DIC. The computer will automatically display all the codes your car has created. It will cycle through each code every 3 seconds. Any code that ends in H is a history code (something that has occured in the past) but is fine now. Once the computer has finished going through all of it's codes, press RESET to enter Manual Configuration mode. It should start with a module and show "NO CODES" or "# CODES".

To optionally reset the codes once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until it displays "NO CODES". Press OPTIONS to go to the next module. Repeat the steps in this paragraph until you have reset the codes in all the computer modules. NOTE !! Only reset the codes IF you want to - it is NOT necessary to do this.
