Default '01 oil consumption

Hi!

Allegedly the '01 vette has oil consumption issues. I was just getting ready to purchase one when I find out about this. Anyone have the same problem? Anyone know what's the cause, or which production dates are applicable. Early in service date or?? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the re-ring club. My 2001 C5 was re-ringed by GM, when I proved that I was going through a quart of oil over 1300 miles. It was a selective recall due to an issue with the oil rings. I think there were 2002 motors involved also.

My '01 uses about 1 qt every 1500 to 2000 miles depending on how I drive. I was never notified about a recall and I purchased my Z from a local dealer. To me its not enough of an issue to go through a re-ring.
Doesn't seem to have any serious negative effects.

I have an early 2001 auto and don't have the problem. I burn a qt about every 3K or so.

From what I have read on the forum it is prevalent to early 2001 mainly with standard transmissions. It has to do with unloaded driving at above 3,000 rpm which causes a ring to float. do a search there is lots of info on it. I don't remember if it was also in the 2002 model years.

good luck in the search.

Default Mine stopped

I have an 01 6spd coupe that I got from a friend I work with. I bought it at 16k and it used a quart every 500 miles. He drove it like a woss. He heard the rev limiter for the first time showing me the car and freeked. It stopped burning oil at 22k. I rev it higher and harder. I say I just broke it in properly.

Default Old and well documented history...........

First off what model 2001?

Second ALL LSx engines consume oil. Not just the GEN 3 engines either. This is all well documented and many GMPT engineers have spoken in detail about their delay in finding the cause (minimum of 3 years) , the effect oil excessive oil consumption ( one of our supporting vendors ) http://www.eliteengineeringusa.com/Catch_Can.html. Then the band aid fix all GEN 3 engines (produced and future GEN 3 engines 2001-2004 ) http://www.rjsmith.com/gm-894549.html * note the dates covered.

Actually no real fix to the main issue which was poor design and machining tolerances ( I myself a retired journeyman machinist) . There are a half dozen variables that contribute to the oil consumption ( that still plague the Corvette till at least 2008). The cheap way was to tell owners to drive less aggressively and then have the 'pit bull' dealers decide if you qualified to get the napier rings . Understand that we , the public to this day have no idea how many or even what % of LS1/LS6 engines had owners complain. We are talking about several hundred thousand engines over just the three (3) years. Issues get blown out of proportion i.e Firestone / Bridgestone Tires, remember that media mess.

But back to your question on the 2001 M/Y. It was the Z06 that brought to a head the oil issue. So now the 2001 is a notorious or infamous vehicle. Read my post (#11) on this recent thread ;http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...post1570223936

Bottom line is that GM wanted to produce a factory race car ( Z06) and they did.

I must add that I have a 2001 Z06 that is perhaps the last Z06 produced with a production date June 18th, 2001. Plus I have two other 2000 FRCes. Neither one gives me any trouble ( oopps, did have a drivers axle seal replaced at 900 miles).

Happy to address any questions on the subject.

The oil consumption problem was most related to early production 2001 mn6 cars. Most autos did not have a problem and if you didn't drive the mn6 aggressively you probably didn't notice a problem either.

My 01 mn6 did consume oil at a rate of +1 quart every 800 miles. I had my car in for the re-ring and that solved the problem.

My 39,000 mile 2000 automatic Z51 uses no oil between oil changes - at least not enough to notice, maybe 1/4 of a quart or LESS (in about 5,000 miles) between changes.

I had my 2001 for 5000 miles now and it used about 4 quarts of oil in that time.

It is true about the oil consumption and driving styles. My friend has an 01 same month build as mine and never burned oil (he drives like a little old lady, dont know why he owns 3 Corvettes), I told him to really beat on it for a few weeks and he experienced oil consumption.
