Default MAF Sensor

I recently installed a different air intake system on my 04 C-5. This unit required moving the MAF sensor closer to the intake and away from the air cleaner. I understand that this could provide a richer mixture. I also have heard that the reason the MAF is originally near the filter is to make sure the mixture is lean enough to meet CARB standards. Is any of this correct? When combined with a B&B exhaust and crossover, the throttle response of the car seems improved slightly. Any thoughts? How much increase in power would this provide, if any? I am aware that most of this is window dressing. Can I gain more response by having the computer parameters changed? Will a plug in computer modifier help? Any ideas?

I'm not an expert on the MAF sensor at all so with that understanding, its only job is to measure the amount of airflow passing through it. It does that by the airflow cooling off the heated element inside and the amount of voltage or current that's needed to heat it back up to its nominal temperature is what the PCM measures, then by whatever algorthym it computes the needed mixture vs timing and so on via the PCM tables. So, I truly don't have a clue if it matters where its located as long as its measuring the total amount of air passing into the engine without leaks past it. Someone else here may certainly have a better idea than I.

the MAF will richen the car up alittle since it is seeing more air w/ the new intake. also it has a built in air temp sensor. Moving it closer to the air cleaner probally has reading colder air coming in, so it will increase the timing alittle also.

A good tune will defiently be a improvement. The closer your get teh MAF to read what is actully going on w/ the A/F ratio the snapper the throttle will feel and will let the car run smoother.

FWIW I've heard / read from several reputable tuners that changing any part of the air intake from stock skews the MAF readings somewhat.

I'm running the Halltech Venom that does the same MAF move as yours and I plan on tweaking my MAF settings after doing VE.

Factory computer parameters are surely conservative. GM did not wish for any pre-ignition or polluting problems. In the Phoenix area I am sure that several tech centers can tweek the computer. Has anyone had any experience with this process. What about cost? One company that someone recommended is too expensive.
