Default Multiple tech help (clutch s/c and such)

Hey guys,
I am wondering a few things and was hoping you could help me out.

I have an ls1 that has basically been turned into an ls2 except for the block. Ok, I have maggie s/c with a 3.1 pulley which is intercooled. I have the larger injectors, reworked ls1 heads, long tube headers, corsa exhaust, intake, and so on.
I am curious about what hp i am putting out the engine or rwhp?

Ok, next questions is I was told that a smaller pulley like a 2.9 with a more aggressive cam and 243 head or a better head that i might get 60 -80hp from it, but the costs are looking like at least 1000 or more. would you say 60-80 is about right and is it worth it?

Lastly, i need to get a new clutch. I suffer from the gummy clutch syndrome that people have had with more hp. My car is fine unless i power hard on it. Then the clutch pedal sticks to the floor. it releases shortly after but it aint good to have that happen i know. sooooooo i would like to know the best clutch out there for the best price. i am not looking to drag or anything. basically this car is a weekender that sees some hard accels every once in a while and maybe an occassional run on the interstate. i would like a stock feeling clutch that can hold the hp i am putting down (i am not doing much more to my car, if i do anything it might be that cam, head, and pulley setup). i would also like a clutch that isnt a light switch (on / off) but one that i can work in traffic or in the twisties or where ever. and if it wasnt stated before price is a factor. i would prefer people not come back with big priced race clutches or whatever, this is a hi-po clutch on a budget that feels or acts like stock project :-p

You assistance is appreciated

Have you tried bleeding the clutch slave cylinder? Not the turkey baster or hand held vacuum pump method from the master cylinder resrevoir, but actually bleeding the hydraulic system from the bleed connection on the slave cylinder as you would bleed the brake system from the caliper bleed screw.

Alot of people have had success using the Tick master cylinder. It seems to eliminate the sticky pedal of high hp motors. Do a search or go to ls1tech manual transmission section for mucho info.

well i did have my mechanic replace the fluid with dot 4. i dont know how exactly he did it, but he did it.
i mean the clutch is gummy, it isnt like an air pocket.
this happened before and after the fluid replacement

I went with the RAM Heavy Duty Clutch out of SUMMIT Racing. I'm currently 505-512 hp and it's handling it very well. Being a heavy duty clutch, the info. states that it may chatter, but I've noticed that only when you take forever to let the clutch out (kinda like a newb or my wife driving a manual ).

Anywho, it was approx. $490, with free shipping (at the time). Install was a piece of cake with only the headers to move. Also installed a remote bleeder up to the firewall.

We have a guy in our club who has been track racing for a year now with one installed (last summer) and has had no problems either.

Might be worth a look.

Maybe you should ask him what he did and what do you mean by "gummy"? Replacing the clutch with aftermarket components is no guarantee that it will operate correctly.

I'm always amused by the recommendations to replace components with a particular aftermarket part when the system's problem has not been fully resolved using basic troubleshooting techniques.

well basically if you drive it around town and get on it a little it is fine.

you hammer down on it and do some hard fast acceleration on it, i find by the time i get to 3rdh or 4th, the clutch feels gummy or spongy. and by the time you get 4th or 5th, the clutch is stuck to the floor.

Now you can pull the clutch up with your foot but it still feels gummy or spongy, and that doesnt mean it will allow you to shift into 6th.
now if you let the car sit and not accel or accel hard after it stick, it will eventually release and feel ok again.

then as long as you dont hammer on it it is fine, but the minute you do, same thing happens then it returns to normal again after you let it be :-p

BTW, any idea how much hp i have based on the before mentioned setup and any recommends on whether the pulley/ cam/ head mods will be worth it from here

thanks for the advice please keep it coming!

Your symptoms are common. I recommend you start with flushing the clutch's hydrualic system with new fluid. If there is no improvement, you will most likely have to start replacing some of the system's components.
Mine was exhibiting the same symptoms, and the cause for the problems was a damaged slave cylinder. All of the other clutch components (pressure plate, clutch disc, thow-out bearing, flywheel & master cylinder) were fine, I replaced the clutch disc and pressure plate anyways since it was apart.
As far as the HP level is concerned, I don't have a clue.
