Default Plugs & Wires

Getting ready for a Rte66 trip in a couple of weeks and pulling some get-ready maintenance. The Vette was running perfectly, and still is, even after I worked on it.

One job was plugs and wires. I’ve got 52k on my almost 10 yr old FRC (Aug99). The old plugs were the original ACDelco 41-952 (Platinum). All plugs were a nice light tan, and plugs 1 thru 6 still had the pucks on them and were gapped between .055” & .058”. 7 & 8 showed remnants of the pucks and were gapped .061” & .065”. Rear plugs might run a little hotter? I went back with ACDelco 41-985 (Iridium), all at .039"-.040". Fairly easy job, but not anything I would want to do too often. Wonder if I could have gone the advertised 100k.

I removed all the old wires, intact, and all were between 333 & 365 ohms. The service manual says to change if 700 or more ohms. They all came off fairly easy, using a wire puller, with some lubricant still in them, though a little dried out. I installed the “Red” GM wires and they all were in the 370-375 ohm range. So, I cleaned up the old wires and still have an extra set. I thought it was interesting that the old wires had less resistance than the new ones. But, the REDs are prettier.

So, any of you contemplating doing this job, go for it. It’s very easy, and satisfying. Just take your time and don’t forget to remove the AIR hoses for doing #’s 5 & 7.

Just passing this info along emphasizing what a great auto this is. On to the fluid changes.
