I'm thinking about getting a set of headers for my '97. But $1000 for a 10 horsepower gain doesn't seem worth it. Since my car is supercharged and making over 500 horsepower at the crank already, will there be a gain from them? I'm thinking long tubes would benefit me more then regular length, but honestly, will it be worth the money? Also, what would be a good brand to go with? Thanks!
I'm sure you would realize a gain because you could get more air out of the engine faster. This mod might cause you to have to reprogram the computer, considering the supercharger and all: something to think about. Maybe Carroll can give you come insight or the other guys on the forum who have supercharged cars. Sharp car....
You'll gain more than most with headers. All forced induction engines love zero backpressure, more so with turbo cars. You may need a smaller supercharger pulley though, when you free up the exhaust, you lose boost because your engine is running more efficiently.
On my Regal, right now I'm running 12# of boost, but when I remove my muffler it drops down to 10#. Even though I see 2 less #'s of boost, the engine runs stronger. I see more advance, and less knock retard because the same amount of air is flowing through the engine, it's just not heated up as much. Plus when I remove my mufler, I can change my pulley and bring the boost back up to 12# for even more power. I usually only do that with 100 octane though.
Thanks guys! I'll give Carroll a call tomorrow and get his opinion. I hadn't thought about needing a reprogram and truthfully don't know if I want to get that involved for a mere 15 or 20 more horsepower. Who knows though, maybe it would be worth it.
