Default M6 grinding while going into 3rd and 4th gear?

I have a 2000 M6 with stock tranny around 60K miles and I just put an MGW shifter in it maybe 2000 miles ago.

I am not sure if it is a shifter issue or just a coincidence, but shortly after the shifter was installed, there would be a slight grind going from 3rd to 4th under normal acceleration.

Just today, I noticed a heavier grind when going now into 3rd gear as well

What could the problem be and what would be involved in the fix?

Thanks!

I would think if the shifter was not aligned right(to high/low) you would only get grinding in either 1-3-5 or 2-4-6 not going into 3rd and 4th.

You can always pull the dash and recheck the alignment.

realign shifter first but it may be syncros/ Sometimes replacing fluid helps.

Thanks for the info.

I pulled out the shifter and it was never misaligned so that's not the issue - it looks like I'm going to be stuck having the tranny pulled

It might be something that can be cured by swapping fluid to RP synchromax. If you drive it hard, probably best to go through the tranny.

Swap the fluid before you do anything expensive. I had a very slight occasional grind going into 3rd which has not happened since putting in fresh fluid, and my shifting effort is also now much much less.

Now what fluid I used is a source of great controversy, but that's a different thread.

Definitely swap the fluid !

Since you have a 2000 with paper blocker rings, I recommend Amsoil ATD.
Do not use Mobil 1 ATF, it caused grinding going into 6th gear for me. It was fixed immediately by changing fluid to Amsoil ATD.

OK thanks fellas I appreciate and I will try to swap the fluid before doing anything else - I assume there are good write-ups around here as to how to do that as a DIY?

Relatively easy. SECURELY jack up car at all four wheels, so car is level (important for fluid amount).

There is a drain plug and fill plug. Make sure you can loosen and remove the fill plug FIRST (especially if this is your only car). Then loosen the bottom drain plug. Replace this plug. Using a cheap, plastic fluid pump, fill the transmission until fluid comes out (level to plug threads). Tighten the fill plug and your done.

If you do some hard shifting, keep in mind the 3-4 shift fork is aluminum and a bent or damaged fork has been the culprit for some 3-4 shift issues in the past. If necessary to rebuild, I recommend considering the steel or cast-iron forks available.
I know it's a worst-case scenario I'm speaking of, but something to maybe keep in mind. Give the folks at RPM transmission a call if you want more info on 6 speed issues and solutions.

Nikolai,
Adding to what Oldvetter said above if you've never crawled under your car before - the tranny is in the back and bolts to the differential. The drain plug is on the bottom rear passenger side corner of the tranny near where it mates to the diff, and the fill plug is on the driver's side about half way forward and halfway up the side of the tranny. You'll need something similar to this to pump the fluid up into your tranny:
AMSOIL Hand Pump
