Barely had the Z06 more than a few weeks..(2004)...took it out for a rip tonight...whipped through 1,2,3,4,5 missed 6th and nailed 4th...rev limited out...tryed again and something didn't feel right. Now...no matter where the shifter is...it seems to be in 5th. Put it in nothing.. and it still is in what I think is 5th. Reverse...whatever...it is in 5th. To get it home...had to rev the crap out of it to get it going....cooled off and its the same. No matter where the shift handle is..it seems to be in 5th. Moving the handle around..it sounds like its moving something..clicking and all the normal noises but same thing..help
Pressing on the clutch does take it out..but let go and its nailing what I think is 5th.
Has anyone had this before. I think..assume that the linkage is off... Car has only 10k miles so I guess nothing is worn out.
From the shifter, there is a solid rod going to the back which is attached to the transmission by a rolled steel pin. Maybe you broke that pin. You'll have to pull the trans to get to it.

Talked to them yesterday and they said some rod(?) broke that attached or presses on the fork(?). Shall have it back next week...definately won't be hammering through the gears like that again!

If you take your car to the red line to often than shift expect your car not to last very long. Transmission/clutch assy is very delicate plus wear and tear when hot rodding your car is extreamly high. Unless you have major $ to burn don`t do it again. Good Luck!
Really silly to say.....depends on if the car is being "driven" or "beaten".
Didn't think I was being too hard on it...rarely take it to redline, never dump the clutch, kinda baby it aside from the occasional "lets go fast" mood...but I think this time..missing the shift I really hammered it to get it in the gear I wanted......poor little car.
Got the 'ol car back yesterday... it was the 5th/6th gear shift lever. $1700 later I have it back. They had the battery disc. for @ 7days so car is running stupid...how long does it usually take before the car relearns itself oir whatever it does?

that's just plain misleading. hundreds of people tracking/racing C5s at roadcourses where you do a redline shift several times per lap are getting years of trouble-free use from transmissions and clutches.
drive your car, shift it at redline whatever, just don't do what our friend here did and you are going to be fine.
to the OP - disconnecting the battery should not make the car run bad the adjustments that are done in dynamic learning mode are usually pretty minor. what exactly is the problem?

Just seems to be idling weird. Ok...till come to a complete stop, then drops to @ 400 for a bit then back up to @750rpm. Just about stalls.
Weird.

that should not take several days. is the car stock?
Yes...car is all stock. I wondered if the tranny boys had knocked off some sensors or something as they really had to tear it apart to get the tranny out. I didn't realize that the tranny is at the back...enclosed drive shaft to the front then the clutch. I am old school and assumed the tranny/clutch was attached to the motor...are all the C5's like this or just the Z06's? Everything was running great before the tranny problem...mmmm.

Sometimes problems come in groups and are unrelated. Check the throttle body, build up can occur at the plate mounting points on each side and cause that diving to 400 rpm then recovering. Use some throttle body cleaner and a soft cloth to clean that build up out. Some times it takes so patience to get it out as the tolerance is tight for a cloth to reach there.
Go throuh the idle re-learn procedure. Do a search in the Tech section and you will find the procedure. It is very easy and sometimes has to be done after the battery has been disconnected for any length of time. This should fix you up. Good luck with it.
With a mechanical over-rev, (when you hit 4th instead of 6th) you could have broken or bent the valve train components. I hope you didn't, but this might explain the bad idle.
Make sure the air intake components are completely together. My Vararam duct came loose just enough to let more air in then was supposed to, by passing the MAF.
I would start with a process of elimination and pull the codes as well.
TB/intake
Plugs
wires
Check every thing that doesn't cost money first and is the easiest.

Well...feel like an *** now... its started to come up with the P0101..something with the MAF...so I though Aaaa...got some crud in there. Started taking the clamps off and as I was leaning over getting them off I happened to be low enough to get a good look at where the accordian attached to the TB. Lone be hold... it was open @1/2 inch just at the bottom. And would you believe once I reattached that..cleared the codes...no more for the codes, go figure...dahhh.
Thanks everyone for all the advice...great help and alot of good info.
