Is there enough increase in performance to justify upgrading rear ratio from 315 to 342?? Thanks
Kajun
No not worth the trouble and the money. Change the gears and the stock converter if you want a VERY noticeable difference in performance. A converter like the Yank SS3200 or SS3600 with 3.42 gears will make a dramatic difference in performance. If you can't afford to do both keep your 3.15s and get a Yank SS3200. This combo will out perform just 3.42s and the stock converter. Excluding NOS a high stall converter will give you the biggest bang for the buck.
Yes it is worth it. I did it on my vert. You can sell your 3:15s to those who have the 2:73s and you can pick up a used set of 3:42s from a Z06 car that has gone to 3:90s or 4:11s for about what you can sell your 3:15s for. Certainly worth it to change the stall at the same time as the labor is just about a hundred bucks more to do the stall while they have the drive train down to change the diff. I went with the Yank 3500(used from A&A).
Thanks guys, appreciate the opions. I did pick up the 342's from a Z06 that went to 411's and now I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to change the diff. or stay with the 315's.

Your 3.15s aren't whats holding your car back it's your stock converter that stalls at just 1300 RPM. I have had 3.15s and a stock converter in my car and it left a lot to be desired when it comes to performance. Do it the right way the first time swap converter and gears at the same time especially since you have bought your 3.42s already.

I did that exact upgrade (3.15 to 3.42) and am still very pleased. Granted, it is a small step, but took me exactly where my end goal was. http://mikemercury.home.att.net/342.htm
I also agree that swapping the converter at the same time is a good idea as well. If you don't normally like higher stall converters - there is still a low price option: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...-da-floor.html
Thanks Mike, I think I'll do it, as well as this converter,
the GM part number for this converter is #24208645.
Let me know if you agree.

Before you decide make sure you will be satified with a converter that offers a small increase in performance. If you are expecting it to get rid of the dead spots in acceleration you get from a roll you will be disappointed. I had a PT2400 & 3.42s in my car and I still had dead spots when I punched it from a roll at certain speeds. If you aren't satisfied you will want go to a converter with more stall. If at some point you think you might want to go to a bigger cam. You definately will need a converter with more stall than this converter offers. Most importantly an SS3200 & 3.42s drives like stock on the street untill you nail it. It is true after market converters are expensive, however they are worth it with the extra performance they provide. They are much smaller and lighter 9.5 inches and only 30 lbs. Compared to 13 inches and 52 lbs. for the stock sized converters. Because of the lighter weigh your engine will rev faster.
