I was doing some research on the MTI B1 cam and in pretty much most of the threads everyone was saying that once you get the cam you would need to reprogram your PCM. Some guys were saying that you could drill a hole in your throttle body to fix the problem you will have with the new cam, some say that you need toship your PCM out to have it reprogrammed, and some say that you can get the HP3 and it will do the reprogramming for you. My questions are:
1.) Which of the three is the safest/best way to go?
2.) If I decide to ship out my PCM, would I have to do this evertime I changed something?
3.) If I do the HP3 can I get it now and then get the cam installed or should/do I have to wait till I get the cam (not sure if the HP3 is a one time deal or if you can continue to reprogram as you add stuff on.)
I might be getting a good deal for a MTI B1 cam and have been doing some research but still have some questions...can anybody help out?
Re: MTI Cam Install...what about the HP3??? (los7883)
With a CAM only install, the HPP3 would allow you to raise the rev limiter, and adjust the shift points on an automatic. It does not allow you to "custom tune" your car like a full blown PCM job. Drilling a hole in the TB is done to smooth and raise the idle to keep the car from dying. You would need to ship out the PCM for a reprogram only if you make major mechanical changes. Your best bet is to snag a copy of LS1Edit when it's available as a single copy version, and let someone who's comfortable changing it do the tuning.

So the best thing to do would be the full blown PCM reprogram? How much does it cost to do that? So in other words, upgrading the cam isn't a quick and easy thing, should I expect to have the car in the shop for about a week? Would it be better to do the cam till the end when I can do the heads too? Hmmm....what do you think?

Yes, the "best" thing to do would be PCM tuning. Usually, $500. A CAM install requires quite a bit of the engine bay to come apart, yes. IMO, you would probably save a little cash by doing both heads and cam at the same time, and usually, tuners are going to give you a better deal on a "package".
