There are bumpers and I don't see how they could come off or get damaged in the way you're describing. If you jack the rear end up and remove the wheel you'll get a good look. You won't be able to remove the protective cover without taking the whole shock off though.
The fronts are missing the bumpers.
The shocks have been leaking oil.the rubber bits couldn't have come from anywhere else.
The blue boots were coming off and I could feel all up and down the shaft.
No bumpers.
Rats.
I guess it's time to changre them since they are leaking oil anyway
How long have you had them? Kind of unusual for them to leak isn't it? I'm thinking about getting a set for my '01 so I'm curious about how they have performed for you.
100k + miles
They stil feel fine as far as handling goes.
These are the first ones I've ever had go bad .
I've had them in almost every vehicle I've owned.
Is your car lowered? If it is then the shock to the bumpers over bad potholes can ruin them. I had the rear shock bumpers go bad in less than 20k miles, one was completely gone and the other was almost gone.
I still have the original Z51 shocks.
Will that bumpstop fit over the shaft on the sport shock ?
I'd settle for that if it would slide down on the shaft w/o to much headache.
I just installed my sports this weekend, I used the bump stops and boots from a set of C5 Z06 shocks I bought used that I was going to install. There is a thread in the C5 General ( you'll find more info over there) section about the bump stops coming apart over time if your car is lowered and mine is. The factory stops are much more beefier and wider, which why I had to use the factory boots as the Bilstein boots are too narrow to fit over the factory bump stops. Several other members said they did the same thing, I did use the Bilstein bushings, the factory bushing seemed too soft to my liking.
