Hey fellow Vette owners, here's a problem I encountered last week and wanted to share with you all just in case you run into a similar situation.
My '99 FRC just turned 10 yrs old (owned it since new) and to celebrate I took it to Deals Gap. After a couple days of spirited driving in the mountains I noticed the smell of gasoline wafting around the car while it was parked at the rental cabin.
I looked underneath the car and there was a puddle under the driver's side tank and you could see the gas dripping out.
The next morning I said my prayers and fired it up to drive to the Chevy dealership which luckily was no farther than about 3 miles up the road. They put her up on the lift and removed the protector plate. What they saw baffled them.....gas was leaking out through one of the bolt holes (around the bolt itself). Tightening the bolt did not help.
After draining out the drivers side tank and removing the fuel pump they could see that the gasket was warped. Thankfully they were able to overnight the part and get it installed the next day. Everything is working now and no more fuel leaks.
Here's a big thanks to Derrick, Rick, and Steve at Max Ware Chevrolet in Blairsville, GA!
Thanks to them I got back home to Orlando only 1 day later than expected.
Oh, and FYI, if you do break down in Blairsville, GA there is only 1 rental car business (Enterprise) and they are closed on weekends.
I too saw a HUGE PUDDLE of gas right under my filler hose on the drivers side. I jacked up the rear and with ignition on the gas poured out of the filter like Niagra Falls. The sealing grommets on one side of the filter were deteriorated so bad it took about 2 hours to remove the lines. I was careful not to wreck the lines but the plastic (nylon?) retainer on one side was disintegrated and would not come out just by squeezing the two tabs. Got a replacement filter with 2 NEW retainers. The one which did come off was 8 years old too so I didnt skimp on that and replaced it too. Had to loosen up the left muffler but not remove it. Just unbolted it from the H pipe and moved it out of the way so my large hands could get up there to remove old filter and install a new one. Word to the wise. 8 years on the original filter is enough. In my case I was lucky this happened in my driveway and not 150 miles from home.BBIGHANK
