Default Okay, try not to bash me....

So... Yesterday I got t-boned and lost my heavily modded 96 CE Vert. It was a 383 with AFR Heads and 375rwhp/376rwtq. I had all the bells and whistles like Coil Over Suspension, LT Pipes, 11" rims, Aftermarket brakes, etc, etc.

Today, i'm looking at a basic Yellow '99 6 speed
I guess the base horsepower on this baby came in at like 345 (YUCK!!!)

What's it going to take to get me back to the 450-500 I was used to. I want to be at 400+ at the wheels. I'd prefer N/A.

Yes, I've read the posts here of what other people have done, but each year newer better methods come out and prices certainly drop. Who knows the best way? Or should I wait for a Z06 and build from that?

Go easy on me, i'm still tearful about my baby dying. Lesson learned, don't drive your corvette in the rain.

One way would be to drop an LS3 in your C5. Not the cheapest, but definitely puts a baseline together that you could build on.

Sorry to hear about your kiddo, but welcome to the C5 generation!

The above is so simple it absolutely brilliant!

The '99 you are looking at is probably going for about 20K right? A C4 would go for about half that.

But is you are ready to make the move to a C5, and I see you like AFR. I would take a look at Tony Mamo's stock displacement set up. His engine package is producing in the numbers you are looking for. But in RWHP.

Go to the AFR website and look under LSx articles. The one I am referring to is the 346 ci displacement write up.

Sorry about your accident. At least you are healthy enough to be looking at you're next project.

The insurance company will not sell me my wreck. I'd have to find a dealer to bid on it at the auction (which I intend to do). If I win it, i'll part it out.

I'm ready for a C5.

Sorry for your loss. I've been t-boned once in my life too. A red-light running drunk. I did a "270" in the intersection. Wasn't fun.

Heads, cam, exhaust and a good low restriction air intake (think high-flow filter/Z06 intake manifold) should get you there.

You're gonna looove C5s.

Wow, okay, the June '05 article made 451rwhp with just heads, cam, headers, and intake, etc. The torque sucked at 337 though. I imagine that could be overcome by some stroking? Sorry, i'm new at the 346ci platform

Any decent Heads/Cam combo will get you 400+ RWHP

Sorry for your loss, and the easy way would be to buy the wreck and pick up a 95 or 96 vert to swap your parts into. I would lean toward the c5/6, just all around better cars. I would buy the newest I could afford . If you plan on modding get a c6 (hid lights , led tails, bezels around the gauges , some say a better interior) already done . Just the engine to do. My opinion.

Sorry for your misfortune. You have not said anything worthy of being bashed......at least your looking at another vette, and not a rice burner.

Not sure what you're referring to with the 337 number. That was at 7,000 RPM. Peak horsepower was 483 at 6,500 and peak torque was 437 at 4,900...

Good luck with your car and new project...

If you want a yellow C5, it's going to have to be a 2000+.

You are going to be going much faster, just moving up from those 11" rims!

Actually, you are right, it's manufacture date was 99, so it was a 2000. Thanks for the update

What's the cheapest good c6 I could realistically hope for?

Okay, so here's what i'm thinking. The price tag on the 2000 C5 is 18k. I'll knock that down at least 1k or 2k.

I'm looking at going this route, tell me what you think...

What cam would you go with?
What headers?

I wonder how much horsepower I can get out of a 383 if I keep compression pretty low to allow a supercharger or turbo later.

If all your looking for is 400rwhp a decent head/cam package will do it and i'm not talking the top dollar stuff either. No need to go stroker either unless you just want to. I'm running texas speed torquerII cam and cheap patriot performance heads with an LS6 intake and i'm putting down 430 at the wheels.Did the install in my garage on jack stands and had it tuned for less than 3grand.

Wow! I guess we have better insurance laws in Wa. I would be furious if they told me that and you should be too!

I would personally stay away from the 383,the 6.0 4.0 bore is a bigger & the 5.7 ltr bore when u try to bore the this motor in our cars 383 is the biggest u can go to,there's so much more available just my opinion, also if u wanna upgrade the 4.0 bore u can take the cubic inches 440+,this is why I am running an 6.6 ltr ecs kit in my car, u can pick the car up for 15 to 20k put an new a & a or ecs kit on the car. Pull the motor stick an forged setup in it & be the sky is the limit ,or should I say the money is the limit on rwhp & rwtq, how about 850 rwhp & 750 ftlbs of tq @ 14lbs of boost & will eat a zr1 on the straightline, anyhow u get my point, for half the money, these cars respond very well to mods,u know this ,I would look for a cheap c5 & the newest yr like someone else had mentioned & then mod it to your descretion & u will be happy ,unless u just like the c4 ,the c5 platform drives night & day different compared to the c4, there are also some great deals on our forum for the c5s & some have been modded, this is where I would come to if I had cash in hand looking to buy a c5,goodluck with ur choices on ur new platform

Honestly, I don't know which direction to go. I would like to buy the cheapest nicest C5 I could find. Then I would like to mod it efficiently (cost wise) as possible.

I like the numbers i'm seeing with just Heads and Cam, but would want room to expand.

For you brilliant guys out there who really know your stuff. If you had a C5 and 10k, how would you best spend the 10k. And this would just be a starting point. Perhaps a year down the road, i'd sink another 10k.
Right now, I think that post on AFR's website that showed like 487rwhp was a really good starting point. I'm guessing that was probably 7k in mods.

Default Blessing in Disguise

There was a LS6 long block crate motor , brand new just recently on the forum 4 sale section, for less than $4K, out of Fla. 425 H.P., right out of the box!. Good luck.
