I ve been noticing that when im cruising and in 2nd gear, when i floor it, it feels like the clutch is slipping slightly (till 4K or over) then it breaks the tires loose and runs perfect! When i take off in 1st and floor it, it runs fine all of the way to top end. The problem is only when i floor it in 2nd gear and only till higher rpms. The only thing i can think is that my (offroad) X-pipe is touching my frame slightly and its making a knock sensor retard timing?? My clutch was broke in like it was supposed to be and its supposed to support alot more HP than i currently have.(my 427 dynoed @ 539 rwhp last yr, a few bolt-ons ago). This car used to smoke the tires anytime/any gear and now it feels like its holding back till the rpms get going. First gear doesn t do it though....It ll blow the tires easily in that gear. You can actually FEEL when the problem goes away in higher rpms because it feels like a little nitrous shot when it breaks the tires loose at 4000-4500 in 2nd gear. I remembered that my Xpipe was touching and wondered if that could be the problem?? Ill do whatever it takes, but i don t feel that it is the clutch because its been broken in right and it has the capabilities of more HP than i have. Thanks in Advance!- Jason
To see if the clutch is slipping on most cars you'd get to 50mph or so in a higher gear and floor it for a second or so and let off. Compare the rates that the tach and speedo go up. you should see relatively little movement on either. if clutch is slipping you'll see the tach rise AND fall back down quickly when you let off. it may be only be a few hundred RPM's too much so you really have to watch it.
but yea, sounds more it's hesitating to me and the gearing of 1st is just covering it up bc you way more power than is needed to break the tires lose in that gear
If the clutch was slipping a lot you should notice the rpm's go up but the car doesn't accelerate like it should. But then, they've been known to slip a bit where you couldn't tell. Still, the engine wouldn't seem like it was losing power with a slipping clutch.
I'd be suspect of the tuning or something just not quite right in the engine. Have you done the simple things like look at the vacuum hoses and check the plugs?
Thanks Guys! Im gonna check the spark plugs-It is a 11.8 CR engine, i heard that higher CR engines eat plugs up faster. The clutch is a Spec 3+ . And like i said, when it hits a little higher rpms, like 4000 or so, it start drifting a little(the rear 335 DRs). But at the start of 2nd gear @ 2K rpms it does "hesitate", i guess its the word..I got some checking to do...lol
A Hesitation it was!!! Spark plug wire was broken and that exact spark plug was finger tight.... New plugs and wires and VROOOM!! Instant 2nd gear "Active Handling" sideways!! Thanks Guys for the opinions! I couldn t see the forrest because of all of the trees! - Jason
