I just installed an HUD motherboard and other parts in my 98 Vette. Everything works fine, but when I went to check/clear the codes on the DIC, I get 'SDM No Comms' message. This has something to do with the air bag system, but the air bag light on the left blinks seven times as it's supposed to. I have a passenger side air bag shut-off switch that I had installed a long time ago and that seems to work properly also.
I was wondering if anyone has come across this problem and/or knows how to fix it.
I think SDM is the Airbag. Forum Name suggests you have a 98 model. Did you swap the cluster for a newer HUD cluster? If so it will not communicate with the Airbag Module from a 98. It was called SRS on 97-99 right?
I just looked at the link in your post and according to that, this is normal.
Original cluster with newer motherboard. Everything seems to work correctly except for the 'SDM - No Comms' which might be normal for this year swap. I have someone else with a 98 who is going to check if he has the same thing (he never checked it before).

That's the problem, there is no code and if I push the 'Reset' button, it clears and then returns with 'No Comm', which I think means no communication with that (SDM) module. If the module doesn't exist as stated in the other post, I'm guessing that might be normal.
I just double checked it and I get '58 - SDM' and about a second later it adds the 'No Comm.' remark. There is no 'U', 'C' or 'H' in the message.

The SDM module is underneath and slightly behind your HVAC panel, so you HAVE an SDM (Sensor and Detector Module). It may not be communicating with the IPC (as someone else suggested), when it runs a self-test on startup. The SDM is the "main brain" of the SIR system that commands the air bags to deploy (or not to deploy) in an accident.
Btw, I just checked and the SDM in the '97-'98s share the same part number but the '99s are different, and starting in 2000 the part numbers changed again.

I'll try to check into it tomorrow. Thanks for the info.
so in order to install this HUD you only changed the motherboard in the IPC? what year did the replacement board come from? would you have this problem if you replaced the entire instrument panel?
