Default radio in "loc"

Any one have any idea or the smarts to get the radio to unlock, after changing the car battery? That is short of taking it to a dealer, it is a two week wait, and cost over $100.00. I am second owner, dont know if it has a code in it or just the factory one. Next time I will have one of those divices you plug into the lighter socket. But mean time, I would appreciate any help here. I can give out any sort of varification, that I am the owner of the car, car id#, drivers lic., date of first born child, etc. :blueangel:

Take care........Dick

Be sure to check your owners manual, the previous owner might have written
down the code. The dealer normally can just get a code from GM/Chevy, I
think they just need your VIN.

$100?? For what? 'That' sounds like poopie to me. It is absolutely not
neccessary to bring the car 'in'. Just call every Chevy dealer in the book,
eventually one will say 'yea...what's your VIN?'. Call you back in an hour.

Hi purerock105:

That was one of the first things I did, check the old book, no such luck. I did not like what the service writer told me either. The first time I had the column lock trouble, they told me it would be 2 weeks before they could get to me, and that I would have to leave my car there. I said right I am going to leave this car that I paid all these bucks for, and take a lot of pride in, at your place for 2 weeks, in your dreams.

He told me they would have to take the radio out, find the code #'s inside and call GM and have them send the code back to unlock it. I know this is not rocket science here, there has to be an easier way.

Take care and thanks........Dick :seeya

turn your ignition to ON, don't crank engine. keep hitting the "min" button until it reaches the number 12, keep hitting the "hour" button until it reaches the number 12. Then hit am/fm button. the readout should now be 1212. The readout should now say SEC. turn your radio or Cd player on. This may not work for all, it's a generic delco number but has worked for a couple of my friends. Make sure you do it in the order above.

Hi fast Frwrd

Thanks for the idea, it did not work. Oh well best layed plans of mice and men do go astray some times. I was told by the dealer that wanted to charge me for this to get 4 0's on it. I was not thinking fast enough, but as I was walking away I got to thinking, it only goes up as high as 1999, so how can you get 4 0's on it? He told me this is what GM uses as a generic code.

When I push the 2 and 3 buttons together I get 662, then when I push the AM/FM button it changes to 666, maybe they all do this, I dont know. So when you told me about the 1212, I thought it might have some merit. But no luck, thanks for the effort.

Take care and thanks......Dick...... :seeya

The same thing happened to me with my 2000 when I disconnected the battery and couldn't find or remember the code I used. I brought my car to the service advisor I'd used before and he called GM and gave them a code he got from doing something to my radio and 2 minutes later he had a 4 digit code that unlocked my radio. I'm sorry I can't remember exactly what he did, but I can give him a call tomorrow morning and find out for ya. It only took him 5 minutes to get the code from my car, call GM, and come back out to my car and give me the code that unlocked my radio. He didn't charge me anything for 5 minutes of his time so I would say the $100 is complete BS.

Call the previous owner and asked him. If you don’t know who the previous owner is you might be able to find his name in the glove box, maybe a tire warranty card if stock tires were replaced or maybe a service receipt or two. Maybe Carfax might have a record of the owner. Any GM dealer can key in the VIN and pull up a name and address but they might not want to give it to you. Might be able to persuade them to call the previous owner on your behalf. Slip the service writer a Jackson and he might be able to take a look at the computer when nobody is around.

I’ve traded cars in on new cars and six months later have the new owner of my old car call me and ask me a question about the car. Don’t know how they got my name but they managed somehow.

Hey Dick
I just got off the phone with my service advisor and he gave me the procedure to retrieve the code you need to use to call GM and get your unlock code. That sounds strange, but trust me, it will work. My service guy even said if I give him the 6 digit code, he would make the call and get the unlock code for your car. Anyway here are the steps you need to do to get the 6 digit code:

1) Hold down the #2 and #3 buttons on your radio at the same time and it will flash 3 numbers.
2) then push the AM/FM button and it should give you the last 3 numbers

If you want to, you can post the 6 numbers and I'll call my service guy back and get you the unlock code. It's up to you.

Here you go.
- Have the key in the on position
- Type in 1378 using the hours and minutes buttons
- Then push the AM/FM button and you should be set

Let me know if it works (it will ;) ). He did tell me they usually charge 50 or 80 bucks for this, but did me the favor. It seems absurd to me that they would charge anything for 5 minutes of effort, but oh well that's why it pays to be nice to your service guy. :blueangel: :D

The dealer that I went to charged me $35 because I didn't purchase it from them! If you go to the dealer that you bought the car from they shouldn't charge you anything. :mad

bleweyes,

Sorry the 1212 code did't work. You did everything right. Noone has to pull a a radio out. You do have to give them the set of three digit codes then they call delco and give them the dealer number at which time you get a 4 digit code to enter. I was hoping the generic onw would work. Sorry. If you have a PAL at a local dealer you cam probably get them to call for you w/ no charge other than that I wouldn't expect them to charge more than $35.00. NAy higher and you should ask if they provide the vaseline with that as well. :mad
Goo Luck

Hi B-Myster

It worked like a champ. That was just too easy, for all this messing around. I dont mean your part, you did all the work and all I did was push some buttons. Some times I guess it is not who you know but what you know. And then some times it is what you know and who you know, like in this case.

Well I cant begin to thank you enough. You and all the guys that have helped me. You went above and beyond. I just hope I get the chance to help and or repay you all some way. This is a great forum, with some great people on it.

B-Myster I cant thank you enough, I thank you for your time and effort. My brother in law use to say, "what is time to a pig" I think I know what he means. What better way can we spend our time then to help our fellow car nut, when he is need of some thing. B-Myster I dont know how or when but you will get repaid.

Take care and thanks..........Dick
P.S. Be sure and thank your friend there, for me. :seeya:

Is there an overide code that works if you forget your own code , or does it only work if it still has the factory code?

Hi Aces

I have it tattoed on my brain. :smash: You have me there on your question, I think what I had was the factory code. Come to think of it that is a good question, how would they be able to come up with a # to unlock it if it was just your set of code #'s? I can see how it works if it is their set of numbers in it. Bar having this problem either write it down and put it in your wallet, or get one of those things you plug into the lighter socket, if you plan on disconnecting the battery.

Funny thing about this when I did get it unlocked it still had the correct time and the saved radio stations. If it lost power long enough to go into this lock thing, how could it keep the memory?

Take care.........Dick

There is a factory code that is keyed to each separate unit. I guess it's for instances like this. Otherwise there would be no way to reactivate your radio if you lost or forgot the code you setup. That would be my guess anyway.

Dick-
I'm glad I could help you especially since it really does suck not having a working radio as I found out when the same thing happened to me when I forgot the code I set on my 2000. As I said in my email, this is what makes these forums great.

Well played...I think information like this is great.

I'd love to get that previous owner information myself...Is that actually a fact that it is in there? Kerbeck Chevrolet was completely uncooperative in providing this, even though they offered it to me before I signed the papers.

Hi JT-C5

Sounds like you really have a uncooperative dealership there. I thought it was your right to know who the previous owners were. Some one said on here that you can give them the Vin # and they can look up the history of the car. I think there are some sites on the computer you can go to to find this out too. Maybe you just have some people at your dealers that dont care to help you, some times you just have to find the right person. Some times it is not the dealership, it is the people that work there.

But just keep in touch with this forum, and you will know everything there is to know about your car, in time. Great forum.

Take care..........Dick :seeya:
