Hi all,
I have access to buy either one of these at a good deal, so I'm wondering which is better to use? I think one is a higher octane than the other, but which one's which? How high is it good to boost the octane rating to? My fuel around here is 91 octane in the super. Do you add it before or after filling? It needs to go into both fuel tanks evenly, right?
Xylene actually has 3 different isomers which each have different octane ratings, though statistically unless care was given to isomeric composition (unlikely) you will have generally 117-119 octane ((R+M)/2)
Toluene only has one isomer, so whatever brand you get will be 116 octane.
Changes in effective octane are on a strictly volumetric basis - e.g.
Final octane = ((gallons of gas * octane of gas) + (gallon of additive * octane of additive)) / (gallons of gas + gallons of additive)
I just go to my local oil products distributor (Monarch Oil) and get 5 gallon tins of both Xylene and Toulene and mix them 50/50 with each other in a gas can that I take to the track. Using Sunoco 94, by adding 5 liters (sorry, I've been metricated up here) it boosts me to 95.4 and 10 liters boosts to 96.8 on a tank.
i take 2 gallons of Xylene or Toluene (i hve been switching back and forth to see if any different; no difference) with me to the gas station when i'm almost empty. i pour in the additive first, then fill up with pump gas. this proves to mix real well.
Toluene is already present in pump gas in about 30% concentrations. You can up this to about 50% and it will still be considered gasoline so it is safe for seals, lines and O2 sensors.
