Default Tire Sensors

Hi,

I'm going to be changing my 98 stock rims with 00 repo. rims... What will happen if I mount new tires on the new rims without the sensors?? Will this cause alot of promblems?? Will I get codes constantly??

Thanks Joe

Also, what's a good inexpensive non run flat tire?? Has anyone heard anything about Toyo tires???

I just switched to non-runflats(Bridgestone S-03 Pole Positions) mounted on Z06 repros and I bought used sensors off of another forum member. They are usually posted for $200-$275 for a used set (cost $375.00 new). I drove it before reprogramming the tire monitoring system to "learn" the new sensors and you do get a "Service Tire Monitoring System" error on the dic every time that you start the car. I suggest that you either transfer over your old sensors to the non-runflats or buy another set. They fit the Z06 repros and only take a magnet and a few minutes to reprogram. It is well worth it. IMO Good Luck. By the way the S-03's were only around $900, hundreds cheaper than new EMT's.

Ok, Joe.... A couple of things....
I imagine the sensors should fit, if you wanted to transfer them.
If you dont , then you can use regular tire stems with no problem. Then all you will get is
the message "CHECK TIRE MON SYSTEM" only ONCE after starting the car.
In other words, each time you turn the key, you will need to clear the message.

I am running SUMITOMO's (non-runflat) and think they are GREAT !

Check out the Tire Rack website. They deliver the tire to a dealer near your house that you select from their list. :seeya

MellowYellow87, FredC5 has all the good answers there. If I may add my .02, you can get new sensors from Fichtner Chevrolet, a forum vendor and Chevrolet dealer for $56 per sensor. The repro Z06 wheels will accept these new smaller sensors with no problems. ALthough, I am not sure how the new smaller sensors will perform with your 98 car. Also the other fellow that replies was also correct as to where if you elect to not use sensors, you will just need to "reset" each time you start the car!
As for tires, I bought the Goodyear F1 Supercar tires and they are pretty nice as far as performance and quietness goes. They were not cheap though at approx $1150 for the 4, Z06 size. Also, the Supercar tires are only 8/32 tread brand new! I will not buy them again for that reason!

My understanding is that the tire sensors were changed for 2001, so the sensors on 97-00 cars can not be interchanged with the ones on 01-02 car, nor vice versa.

Whether you will get codes or not seems to depend on the year of your car. I drove my 2000 for a week, without sensors, multiple starts and shutdowns, distances of between 1 and 40 miles per trip, and ZERO codes set in the computer, and no messages on the DIC. The tire pressure readings on the DIC were blank.

I just bought 2002 Z06 wheels for my 99 Coupe. I was going to buy the Supercar tires. What other brand do you suggest?
