I tore a the outer CV boot putting in the new dif. I want to replace the outer CV boot, but I couldn't figure out how to get the outer CV joint off the shaft (the whole shaft is already out of the car)
The manual says put it in vice and knock the end off with a block of wood. My manual is for a 00 and I have a 99. Well splinters of wood going everywhere and I upped it to a block of aluminum and it is still not coming off. Did I miss something? I know there is a snap ring on the outside, but how do you get to it with ball bearing cage still on the end?
I just did mine not to long ago.You have to hammer it off like the book say's.Its a PITA though.I put mine in a vise and used 2 piece's of steel block's from my press.Wait till you have to put it back together and you have to hold the C-clip and hit it back on with all that grease..................Paul
I found an easy way to get the locking ring to seat. Either put a new one in or reshape the old one so its tight again. A little work with a pair of channel locks and it fit tight enough to slide the ball bearing cage back on. If only the boot clamp fit now. The brand new one is about an either inch to short.
