Default Changed Differential Fluid Past Weekend

I did my first diff fluid change on my 97. Not bad at all! After doing several searches here, I chose to avoid synthetic fluids and use what was called for in my owners manual, GM 80W90 and the LS additive. I decided that after 46,000 miles of leak-free no noise driving on the same factory fluid, why change things. My manual specs 1.5 qt of diff fluid and 4 oz of additive (52 oz. total) and that's exactly what had drained out. Why have I read some posts claiming 1.7 qt diff fluid plus the 4 oz of additive (58.5 oz total) is required? Did newer models actually hold more fluid? My fluid level was just a bit lower than the fill hole when complete which I believe is correct. I did pre-mix the fluid with the additive before filling and I then did 10 figure eights in the parking lot. Never had the first pop or groan! Oh, and a simple way to know if you have your car level before re-filling? Watch the old fluid drip out of the drain hole and adjust the front end height with your floor jack until the drip is coming from the side of the hole, not the front or back.

Better synthetic fluids have evolved since your 1997 was built. They can offer much better temperature stability and greater wear protection, than the old generation differential fluid that you're using.

I can't agree with your logic on this.
