You should use fluids that meet or exceed the manufacturers specifications, they are listed in your owner's manual. Anything else is either speculation or opinion.

I used Prestone DOT4 brake fluid when I changed my clutch fluid per the Ranger method. My fluid was nasty as well until I swapped it. Have a great trip!
