So I have got a replacement rear diff coming b/c somehow my other is about to crap out on me. Which I don't understand b/c I had it serviced two or three years ago and the fluids were replaced with royal purple. Oh well it is what it is. So with that said... the replacement diff is a 1999 stock 3:15 setup with 50,000 miles on it. I am guessing I should replace all the seals....right? Where can I get this stuff? Autozone? I won't have to reprogram anything b/c it's the same 3:15 ratio that I already have in there. So basically I am thinking get the replacement here... put some royal purple 75w90 in it and manually spin it to make sure everything is fine. If that checks out then pull the old diff and start with the install of the new while replace the seals between the right and left axles along with the tranny seal. Does that sound about right? Later down the road I will build up the original diff and make it more bullet proof.
Sounds about right to me. I'd go ahead and change out both side cover o rings too. Check back on some previous tech posts in regards to which proceedure and sealants, part #'s etc. Good luck.
Replace both axle seals and both cover seals. They're prone to leaking, and new seals will be the better, updated design. Also seal the covers with anaerobic gasket maker + activator (e.g. Loctite 518).
Shouldn't have to reprogram anything AFAIK. Speed sensors are in the wheels.
How many miles (and what kind) on the Diff thats going bad? Know one can say for sure its the fault of the fluid but I'm curious why you'd put the same oil back in? Why not go with something less controversial like Mobil 1? The use of RP has so much conflicting info that its confusing.
You say its about to crap out - what are the indications? Whining sound? Metal in the oil?...
I agree with the above posts - pull the side covers off and you can inspect everything. Replace all the seals. They are dealer only items by the way...and they aren't cheap (at least from my local dealer). If you have the time order online.
